Mesoraca is a comune and town with a population of 5525 people in the province of Crotone, in Calabria, Italy.
History
A suggested origin of the name Mesoraca stems from the Greek word meso, meaning intermediate point or half way point, and, the Aramaic word raca, meaning 'fool'. It may thus be speculated that Mesoraca means the halfway point to a fool's or unenlightened one's journey. It has been suggested by unconfirmed reports that the journey was between Crotone (where the Greek philosopher Pythagoras is said to have settled) and the commune of Colosimi (meaning here are the people of great importance or ability). Mesoraca is approximately at the half way point of a trail through the mountains linking Crotone to Colosimi. It is known that the first Masonic workshop was conducted in Colosimi in 1813 suggesting a significance in Freemasonry linked to Pythagoras or his followers the Pythagoreans.
Economy
Mesoraca relies on the production of oil, wine, cereals, citruses, and intensive cattle rearing.
