According to his contributions, the main manifestations are his “Ciutats” which, during his artistic career, have developed significantly (from materials to his meaning).
Biography
Miquel Navarro was born in Mislata, Valencia in 1945. From 1964 to 1968 he studies painting studies San Carlos School of Fine Arts. In 1972 he decided to abandon the painting and determined to spend his entirely artistic work through sculpture. However, he continued to paint. Another artistic manifestation he worked on was poetry, in fact, he has launched lots of poem with his sculptural works.
On 1973, he shows his first “Ciutat”, one of his main sculptural manifestations. At this stage, the main materials used were fireproof materials, as well as terracotta and sand. In the period between 1975 and 1980 he exhibited his main works, such as “Pirámide” or “Els altres 75 anys de pintura valenciana” at many exposition in Valencia (Valencia Architects School) and, specially, in Madrid (Vandres Gallery and Ponce Gallery).
After these initial expositions, his sculptures started to be very popular in Europe and America. He made an appearance in many showrooms for example in Washington (XI Conferencia Internacional de Escultura) or Los Angeles (Architectural Sculpture en el Institute of Contemporary Art en Los Ángeles), both in 1980. However, he continued to show his sculptures in Spain, specially in Valencia and Madrid where he had a very important influence. In the same way, his sculptural contributions also increased. Some of the most remarkable works of the period between 1980 and 1990 are "Estructura urbana" (1983), "Des terrar" (1985-1986) or "Minerva Paranoica" (1989), a monumental sculpture. The main difference between his previous sculptures and these new ones, apart from their complex meanings, are the materials used. Among them the most important one is the iron.
Until these days, he continues with a making a large number of sculptures and showrooms. Among them, we could highlight his showrooms in Bilbao (Galeria Colon XVI) in 2005 or Valencia (Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM) in 2009. On the other hand, among his contributions in this period we could name "Ciudad Roja" (1994), "Casco Urbano" (1999) or "L´Almassil" (2010).
His work
It is very difficult to put Miquel Navarro into a concrete artistical movement. During his artistic career, he has taken and used lots of elements of lots contemporary styles from the Baroque period to the most modern ones such as Postmodernism or Minimalism. Because of this eclecticism, Miquel Navarro has made an own artistic style which unites all the contemporary movements. One of his main contributions is the “Ciutat”. Miquel Navarro says:
His works were collected by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
