Movie Pilot is an American entertainment website that covers news and editorial for films, television, popular culture, and video gaming. Founded in Berlin, Movie Pilot also acts as a social media agency for film studios, including 20th Century Fox and Sony, using audience analytics software to conduct digital marketing campaigns across social media.
While Movie Pilot has an in-house staff of editors and writers, much of their content comes from fan contributors, in the "open-posting" vein of Bleacher Report or Tumblr. According to Quantcast, Movie Pilot averages more than 60 million views per month and more than 14 million unique views in the U.S., second only to IMDb for film websites.[2] Movie Pilot also posts select stories through their multi-channel Facebook platform; their 14 channels total more than 28 million likes on Facebook, with "Movie Pilot Horror" and "Movie Pilot Vampires" tallying the highest marks (5.66m and 4.25m, respectively).[3]
Movie Pilot has offices in Venice, Los Angeles and Berlin.
History
Movie Pilot was launched by co-founders Tobi Bauckhage, Jon Handschin, and Ben Kubota in 2007, a Berlin-based film website that also offered social media consulting services to film studios. Using an open-posting model that invites readers to write their own content, moviepilot.de grew to more than 6.8 million unique monthly views by October 2014 (Google Analytics).[4]
Now based in Venice, Los Angeles, Movie Pilot employs approximately 100 employees worldwide.[5]
Contributor platform
Movie Pilot affords fans the opportunity to create their own content through an open posting platform similar to Wordpress, but with distribution to a network of millions. From editorial and news writing to fan art and video production, much of the content on Moviepilot is created by fan contributors. Movie Pilot rewards contributors with access to press events and celebrities, having recently launched a "Movie Pilot Experience" series that chronicles fan perks.[6]
