Facade of the Museum in Rue de la République.

Museon Arlaten ("Arles Museum" in Provençal language) is a museum dedicated to the ethnography of Provence. It is located in Arles, at 29, rue de la République, and it is hosted in the 15th century Hôtel particulier Laval-Castellane,[1] now a monument historique. The museum has been closed for repair works since October 25, 2009. Its reopening, planned for 2015, has been postponed to 2017.

History

The museum was founded by Frédéric Mistral[1] and opened in 1899. With the help of Jules Charles-Roux and Jeanne de Flandreysy, he established a gallery with statues from the Antiquity found on the grounds of the museum.[2]

Collections

The museum has an important collection of Provençal folk art, displaying furniture, costumes, ceramics, tools and farming implements.
