Natasha Low Yi Ling (born October 11, 1993), better known by her stage name, Tasha (Korean: 타샤), is a Singaporean singer, dancer and television host, based in South Korea. She was the leader of Singaporean-South Korean girl group, Skarf, signed under Alpha Entertainment.[1] Born and raised in Singapore, Low is thus fluent in English and Mandarin, and subsequently in Korean after moving to South Korea in 2011 to prepare for her debut with Skarf.[2] In 2015, it was announced that Low will be joining a new group after leaving Skarf.[3]
Early life
Born into a family of ballroom dancers, Low's great-grandfather was Low Poh San, who introduced ballroom dancing to Singapore and would later become Singapore Professional Ballroom Champion in 1946 from 1950 to 1953.[4] Low's grandfather and parents were also accomplished ballroom dancers, with the former being Sunny Low, the owner of the renowned Sunny Low Dance Studio and a household name in Singapore in the 70's and 80's.[4] Her brother also trained in Thailand to be a professional ballroom dancer.[2]
Low used to be a member of her primary school's TAF (Trim and Fit) Club.[2] After completing her Secondary School studies at Fuhua Secondary School, Low accompanied her friend to participate in the Singapore leg of the JYP and Alpha Asean Region Audition held in 2010 by Alpha Entertainment, which saw her defeating 3000 competitors to be one of the four Singaporeans selected.[2] Despite her fluency in dance, she sang during the audition. She moved to South Korea in the following year.[2][5]
It was revealed that as of 2012, Low had not been in any relationship before.[2]
Career
2012 to present: Debut with Skarf and solo activities
After undergoing two years of intensive training in South Korea, Low debuted with Skarf, in which she served as the leader, rapper and vocalist. She and another member, Ferlyn, were the two Singaporean members in Skarf until Wong left the group in 2014.[6][7] The group debuted with their first mini album, Oh! Dance[8] and performed the song on KBS's Music Bank on August 17, 2012.[9] On August 14, 2012, Skarf held their debut showcase in Seoul.[10]
In 2012, Low was picked as an endorsement model for a smartphone line, Pantech Vega R3.[11] In 2013, she was selected as a host for Arirang's music program, Pops in Seoul. In the same year, Low also appeared on MBC's Gangnam Feel Dance.[12] In 2014, She joined MBC's Dancing 9 alongside Glam's Zinni, but was disqualified for personal reasons.[13] In 2015, Low appeared as the female lead in TimeZ's and Roy Kim's MV for "Awaken" and "The Great Dipper", respectively.[14]
It was announced in 2015 that Low will be joining a new group following the disbandment of Skarf in 2014, with the group being sold to CJ E&M.[3][15] In 2016, Low appeared in Chinese Reality Programme, Lady Bees, which introduced her as a trainee under CJ E&M.
