New Albany High School (Indiana)

New Albany High School is a public high school located in New Albany, Indiana, United States. Founded in 1853, it is one of the oldest public high schools west of the Alleghenies and the first in Indiana. New Albany High School has the first FM broadcasting High school radio station (88.1) to be licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and has had their own Public-access television cable TV channel WNAS-TV since 1980. It is a part of the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation.

The school serves New Albany and surrounding unincorporated areas.^[3]

History

The school opened in 1853 as the first high school in Indiana. The school was operated on an irregular basis, and closed for years at a time. During part of the American Civil War, the school building was leased to the federal government, to be used as a hospital for soldiers. Continuous operation of a school has occurred since 1864 (though in varying locations). The final current location of the school was established in 1928.

Charles Allen Prosser attended and later ran the school as superintendent from 1900 to 1908, where he would form many of his opinions that would revolutionize teaching nationally in the decades to follow.

Athletics

New Albany has won two basketball state championships, one in 1973 and one in 2016.^[4]

Media

WNAS, 88.1 FM, is the student-run school radio station. It broadcasts to the greater metropolitan area (Louisville). It has been in operation since 1949, and was the first FCC-licensed high-school FM radio station in the United States. WNAS features shows such as Mathathon, Spell Bowl, and Challenge where teams from local elementary schools come to compete.

WNAS-TV is the television station run in cooperation with Floyd Central High School.

• Camille Wright – Former American swimmer, winner of a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal
• Fuzzy Zoeller - Class of 1970 - Golfer who won multiple PGA Tour events, including The Masters in 1979 and the US Open in 1984

Faculty

• Edwin Hubble - Astronomer, after whom the Hubble Space Telescope is named. He taught physics and Spanish and served as basketball coach at the school in the early 20th century^[6]
