"Obey" is a song by Italian metalcore act Upon This Dawning which was released via Artery Records. It is the first single released from their third album, We Are All Sinners.
Background and promotion
The composition of the song makes use of heavy guitar riffs, dropped A tuning, symphonic metal synths and elements as well as synthetic orchestras in verses and breakdowns commonly found within the metalcore genre.
Lyrically the song deals with the topic of God, religion and sin and how any god that is worshipped will only treat his followers as mere slaves. These "slaves" will eventually have nothing to live for and will become disillusioned with life.
"We wrote Obey cause we wanted to give a real message to people, a message that makes you think about your life, we are just trying to push people to think with their own brain, to not being a sheep".
A lyric video for the song was released later in 2014, prior the album's release.
