Josephine Vander Gucht Anthony West |
Oh Wonder are a London-based alt-pop duo, consisting of Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West. Since releasing their DIY debut album, they have seen international success with their alt-pop singles. Gucht and West recorded and released one song a month for a year, starting in September 2014.[2] All of the songs were released together as a self-titled debut album on 4 September 2015.[3]
Sold out shows in London, Paris, New York and LA a week after their debut album release marked the beginning of the band's touring career.
History
Early life and career
Raised in London, Vander Gucht was classically trained in singing, violin, and piano. West was born and raised in the Isle of Man. He moved to Canada for a year before settling in England. West was introduced to guitar through his uncle, who was a bluegrass musician.[3] He was in several rock bands and was part of the electronic duo We the Wild, while Vander Gucht made solo music under the alias Layla.[4]
2014-present: Oh Wonder and touring
West and Vander Gucht had an unorthodox approach to crafting their debut album, Oh Wonder. They wrote, recorded and released one song every month, beginning on 1 September 2014.[5] Each song was written, produced and mixed by the duo in their home studio in South-East London.[6] These monthly installations culminated a year later in the release of their album, which included two unreleased songs. The album reached #26 in the Official UK Charts, #16 in the Canadian Charts and #80 in the US Billboard 200.[7][8]
