Ondu Muttina Kathe (Kannada: ಒಂದು ಮುತ್ತಿನ ಕಥೆ, English: Story of a Pearl) is a 1987 Indian Kannada film directed by Shankar Nag, starring Rajkumar in the lead role.[1] It is loosely based on John Steinbeck's book The Pearl. It is considered as the cult classic in the history of Kannada cinema. Though the film was not a big success, the movie is still remembered for its brilliant story and its technical superiority. It is said to be the first Indian film to be shot underwater.[2] This film is also notable for the underwater swimming of Rajkumar in ocean without oxygen at the age of 58 and a fighting scene between Rajkumar and an octopus.

Reception
Riding on high expectations, Ondu Muttina Kathe received mixed response upon release, however, ended up doubling its investment. The film's budget was ₹23 Lakh and collected a share of ₹54 Lakh at the box office. That was the lowest share for a Dr Raj movie in the 80's. However, the movie still ended up making ₹30 Lakh profit. Over the following years, Ondu Muttina Kathe has achieved cult status and is considered as one of the most technically advanced films of the 80's era of Indian cinema.
