Otto (14 February 1989 – 14 January 2010), also known as Otto Jones, was a male dachshund-terrier cross who, from October 2009 at 20 years and 8 months, was said at the time to hold the Guinness World Record as the world's oldest living dog until his death in January 2010.[1][2] [3]

Biography

Lynn Jones of Shrewsbury, England, had owned Otto since he was six weeks old.[1] He never produced any offspring.[4]

Otto suffered from arthritis and was slightly deaf, but still liked to play with the children on his street.[5] Lynn and her husband of eight years, Peter, put his longevity down to wholesome food, plenty of love and regular checkups at the vet.[1][5] Lynn often had to sleep in the spare room in their house, as Otto preferred to be tucked up in bed with her husband at night.[1]

He was euthanised at 10:10 a.m. on 14 January 2010 following a diagnosis of stomach cancer the day before.[2][6][7]

Nomination

The couple nominated him for the title of the world's oldest dog in September 2009 following the death of the previous record holder, a 21-year-old dachshund from New York named Chanel.[4]

Following the death of Chanel in August 2009 there was a period of nominations to the Guinness World Records for the title of the world's oldest dog, including a terrier cross from Louisiana named Max, Max who was nominated as being 26 years old.[8] Guinness World Records requested evidence from all parties involved and following an investigation of each case announced the new world's oldest dog on 26 October 2009.

Otto was presented with the certificate whilst filming the 4 November 2009 edition of The Paul O'Grady Show in the UK which was covering the subject of elderly dogs.[1]
