P. C. Joshi (born, June 1, 1956) is a Professor of Social Anthropology at the Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi, India. His area of specialization is Medical Anthropology and he focuses on Anthropology of Disasters, Anthropology of Development and on issues related to Social Exclusion and Adverse Inclusion.
Education
Prof. P. C. Joshi received his B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology, from University of Delhi, India. He did advanced courses on ‘Anthropology and Epidemiology: integrating concepts and methods’ and ‘Health of Unstable Populations – Health Care in Unstable Situations and Complex Emergencies”, Department of Tropical Hygiene and Public Health (ATHOG), University of Heidelberg, Germany, 2003 and 2007 respectively. He also attended Certificat d’ universite, Assessing Public Health in Emergency Situations, Universite catholique de Louvain (UCL), Brussels, Belgium, 2007.
Career
He started his teaching career in 1985 from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University and served as Head, Department of Anthropology till 1997. He joined Institute Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), New Delhi in 1997 and held the position of Head Department of Medical Anthropology at IHBAS from 1997 through 2003. He is credited with establishing the Department of Anthropology at HNBG University and the Department of Medical Anthropology at IHBAS. He is currently Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Delhi, India.
He has successfully supervised 25 Ph.D. and 15 M.Phil besides many master’s dissertations on some very interesting topics. He was nominated Asia Coordinator of the European Union 6th Framework Microdis Integrated Project, 2007 and was a delegate of the European Union to Poznan, Poland in United Nations Framework Climate Change Conference in 2008.[18] He is the current UGC Sap advisory committee member for the SV University, Tirupati, Vidhyasagar University, Midnapur and Karnataka University Dharwad. He has been recently nominated as the Task Force Member, Department of Biotechnology, and Government of India. He has organized over fifteen Conferences included one in the University of Hue, Vietnam in the year 2010.
Professional Membership
He is the current president of the Society for Indian Medical Anthropology (SIMA), Mysore, India and Executive Member of the Ethnographic and Folk Culture Society, Lucknow, India. Besides, he is life member of India anthropological Association, Delhi and Life Fellow, Indian Association of Social Psychiatry. He is the Editor of Society for Medical Anthropology Bulletin.
Writings
He has co-authored nine books, over 157 articles, book chapters and reviews in area of Medical Anthropology, Traditional Medicines, Shamanism, Impact of Disasters, Life Style Diseases and Antibiotic Resistance. He has worked on many research projects and submitted over 14 research reports to various funding agencies and government policy planning agencies. He has worked in interdisciplinary areas with psychiatrists, psychologists, epidemiologists and other researchers on various topics and co-authored many papers. His papers have appeared in the journals such as World Development, Indian Journal of Pharmacology, The Eastern Anthropologist, Man in India, Journal of Biosocial Science, Journal of South Asian Disaster Studies, Journal of Anthropology, American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, European Academic Research, South Asian Anthropologist, Prehospital and Disaster Medicine, International Journal of Human Science, Journal of Anthropological Survey of India, Indian Journal of Medical Research, Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Values in Health, Global Health Action, Family Practice, National Medical Journal of India and many more journals.
Awards and Honours received
Prof. P. C. Joshi is recipient of the Indira Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra National Award as Friends of Trees founder member, 1987 and the Inter-University Centre Associateship Award in Humanities and Social Sciences, 1996-1999, Certificate of Honour at the First France-India Meet on Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, 2007, Plaque of Appreciation from Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines, 2008, and Certificate of Appreciation on his research on disaster impacts in Asia and Europe by Faculty of Public Health, University of Indonesia in 2009, among other honours and distinctions.
He also has the distinction of discovering a Paleolithic site in Delhi in 1983.
