Episodes
Episode 1: What Makes An All Star?
Original airdate: February 11, 2016
The designers must tap into their past to create a look inspired by a moment that kick-started their fashion career. Valerie is praised for her game-changing design while Ken is declared the one to beat by Isaac. Despite failing to impress the judges or fulfill the dictates of the challenge, Mitchell and Daniel are both spared from elimination, as Alyssa gives both of them a "second chance."
- Guest Judge: Dmitry Sholokhov
- WINNER: Valerie
- ELIMINATED: None
Episode 2: Let it Flow
Original airdate: February 18, 2016
The Alvin Ailey dance studio serves as inspiration for this week's challenge: a wind machine on the runway tasks the designers with creating dramatic, elegant looks that showcase the movement of the fabric. In the workroom, Mitchell accuses Sam of slandering him on his blog to which Sam and Stella tell Mitchell to grow up. Fäde receives a negative critique from Zanna, who does not see the fabric flowing adequately.
On the runway, Sam is declared the winner by guest judge Vanessa Hudgens, who offers to wear his dress. The bottom two are Emily and Fäde, with the latter being eliminated for making his model look old.
- Guest Judge: Vanessa Hudgens
- WINNER: Sam
- ELIMINATED: Fäde
Episode 3: A Little bit Country, a Little bit Rock 'n' Roll
Original airdate: February 25, 2016
The designers must team up with music group Little Big Town to create "opposites attract" red-carpet gowns for the Academy of Country Music Awards. Because of his win, Sam is allowed to pick his partner, and choose the remaining pairs. The pairs are:
Sam/Kini, Asha/Alexander, Valerie/Stella, Emily/Layana, Dom/Ken, Daniel/Mitchell
Immediately, Mitchell becomes frustrated with Daniel, and walks away from their workstation, whereas Kini frets that Sam will be unable to match his construction prowess. Stella and Valerie's butt heads all challenge, culminating in a massive fight over a belt right before the runway.
On the runway, the Asha/Alexander and Sam/Kini teams are declared the tops of the week, whereas the Mitchell/Daniel and Stella/Valerie teams fall to the bottom. Kini bemoans Sam's omission of credit for his part in the latter designer's look, but Asha and Alexander are declared the winners of the challenge. Despite Stella and Valerie's head-butting, it's Mitchell and Daniel who fall into the bottom two for the second time in three challenges, and Daniel is sent home.
- Guest Judge: Little Big Town
- WINNER: Alexander & Asha
- ELIMINATED: Daniel
Episode 4: Fashion 911
Original airdate: March 3, 2016
The designers use materials from the Fire & Police department and E.M.T they can find in a de-commissioned fire house for their first unconventional challenge for the season.
In the workroom, Kini is sniping at Sam for what happened in the last challenge when Sam failed to acknowledge Kini's contributions to his design on the runway. Asha and Alexander have issues with their garments due time management and not being inspired, and Stella creates a tubular coat out the blue hose, which Zanna convinces her to abandon.
On the runway, designers Ken, Sam, and Valerie have the top scores of the week, whereas Stella, Asha, and Alexander were the lowest scores. Ken and Sam are praised for manipulating the fire hose into two very strong textiles, and ultimately Sam is declared the winner of the unconventional challenge.
Alexander is commended for his textile, but the judges needed him to elevate that dress to another level, whereas Asha is told she had good ideas, but didn't take them far enough. However, Stella is sent home both for her "mall" garment, as well as the judges' frustration with her excuses on the runway.
- Guest Judge: Johnny Wujek
- WINNER: Sam
- ELIMINATED: Stella
Episode 5: Birthday Suits
Original airdate: March 10, 2016
The designers must create winter wear for "naturists" (commonly referred to as nudists) of both sexes.
In the workroom, Kini continues to complain about Sam, whereas Mitchell is focused on toning down his design for his male client. During the fitting, Sam's model claims that she is not a fan of the coat he's made for her and he abandons it.
On the runway, Emily, Dom, Kini, and Mitchell are the top scores this week, leaving Valerie and Sam was on the bottom as the only two designers on the bottom. While Kini and Dom are commended for their work, Emily and Mitchell are decided upon as the top two, and Emily is declared the winner--her first Project Runway challenge win.
The judges think Valerie overthought her design, and put way too many ideas in her final look. Naeem Khan thinks it's super bulky, and Georgina Chapman thinks it was a "house coat on steroids." The judges are very disappointed in Sam's drab design, given his two challenge wins. Valerie and Sam are both spared by the judges for their past performance.
After he informs designers of the season's second double save, many of the designers lash out at Sam in the designers lounge, accusing him of being ungrateful (Mitchell) and for flirting with the judges (Alexander). Sam leaves the designers lounge, vowing to take down each other these designers "politely."
- Guest Judge: Song of Style and Naeem Khan
- WINNER: Emily
- ELIMINATED: None
Episode 6: Going for Baroque
Original airdate: March 17, 2016
The designers celebrate Baroque fashion by creating couture inspired gowns.
In the workroom, several of the designers still seem aggravated by the double save from the previous episode. Perhaps because of this, Zanna's critiques are uniquely scathing--she doesn't like Ken's material choice, and bemoans Mitchell's workmanship. She also tells Kini that his dress looks like a lampshade.
On the runway, Valerie and Sam are both lauded for making comebacks from the previous episode, landing in the top three, but Ken is given the win having stuck to the design that Zanna heavily criticized. Mitchell is scolded by the judges for falling back into over-designing, and is sent home.
(During the airing of the episode, there were a number of sources calling Kini out for recreating an Alexander McQueen dress from his final collection in 2010.[3])
- Guest Judge: Coco Rocha and Keren Craig
- WINNER: Ken
- ELIMINATED: Mitchell
Episode 7: Bait and Stitch
Original airdate: March 24, 2016
Alyssa Milano greets the All Stars at Mood and presents them with their challenge: the designer are assigned compulsory fabrics at random, and must create high-end resort wear with them. The fabric assignments are listed below:
Alexander: Upholstery Asha: Neoprene Dom: Jersey Knit Emily: Denim Ken: Silk Charmeuse Kini: Brocade Layana: Lightweight Cotton Sam: Lace Valerie: Linen
Several of the designers are flummoxed by their material choices, including Alexander who seems incredulous at the idea of using upholstery fabric to make high fashion evening wear. However, the tables are turned once more as the designers return to the workroom to find Alyssa present once more. The All Stars balk as she assigns them the second part of their challenge: the designers must all switch fabric. As the winner of the previous week's challenge, Ken is given the opportunity to choose first, and selects Asha's neoprene. The rest of the designers choose as follows:
Asha chooses Dom's Jersey Knits. Dom chooses Valerie's Linen. Valerie chooses Layana's Lightweight Cotton. Layana chooses Ken's Silk Charmeuse. Alexander chooses Emily's Denim. Emily chooses Alexander's Upholstery.
This leaves Sam and Kini to switch fabrics with each other, which neither designer is happy with; Kini is frustrated with Sam's small amount of yardage, and Sam hates the "Disney Princess" colors Kini has chosen. During the critique, Emily has a breakdown over the unwieldy fabric she's chosen from Alexander, whereas Kini is scolded by Zanna for not embracing the challenge.
On the runway, Dom, Sam, and Ken all receive high scores, and Valerie, Emily, and Layana receive low scores. The judges are amazed that Dom has created her own textile for the challenge, and several are charmed by the wit of her choice to make it look somewhat like a vintage beach towel. Ken is praised for the drama of his look given the fabric he worked with, but the judges note as heavy-handed touch in the bodice. Sam is praised for making brocade seem so light and airy, but Alyssa points out that his dress is very evidently hand sewn (he had started over with only two hours remaining in the day). Guest judge agrees to wear Dom's dress, and she is declared the winner of the challenge.
On the bottom, the judges struggle to find anything noteworthy about Valerie's design, and none of them are fans of the severity of Layana's look. Emily, however, is praised for always sticking to her distinct point of view, and Isaac goes as far as to remove her from the lower scoring looks. This leaves Valerie and Layana as the bottom two, and Valerie falls victim to the "three strikes you're out" clause despite her high scores throughout the competition, and is sent home.
- Guest Judge: Megan Hilty
- WINNER: Dom
- ELIMINATED: Valerie
Episode 8: Once Upon a Runway
Original airdate: March 31, 2016
Laura Michelle Kelly, star of Broadway's Finding Neverland, present the designers with their challenge this week: to re-imagine looks for classic fairy-tale characters. The characters are assigned thusly:
Alexander: Cinderella; Asha: Rapunzel; Dom: Tinkerbell; Emily: The Snow Queen; Ken: Snow White; Kini: Alice (in Wonderland); Layana: Belle; Sam: The Little Mermaid.
In the workroom, Sam and Kini engage in a showdown over who's doing better in the competition; Kini attests that Sam is the only remaining "saved" designer, and implies that he'll soon be eliminated. Sam responds that he's won two challenges in the competition, and mocks Kini's insinuation by reminding him that he has yet to win a challenge. Kini shoots back by recalling his season, where he won three challenges (one tie win, one group challenge win, and one individual win) and also made it to fashion week, seemingly unaware that Sam was 1st runner-up on Under the Gunn. This also brings about the season long debate about the Little Big Town challenge, and whether Kini made Sam's look. Sam attests that Kini made the top for his garment, but the rest was his design, seemingly ending the discussion.
On the runway, Asha, Dom, and Kini land themselves the top spots, and Sam, Layana, and Alexander wind up in the bottom. Asha is commended for her modern take on elegant princess wear, whereas the judges praise Dom for going more casual with her design. Kini is told that he has a very interesting idea, but the judges don't quite know what to make of it. Kini is called as safe, leaving Asha and Dom as the top two, with Asha ultimately taking her second win of the season.
On the bottom, the judges like Sam's approach, but the construction is off, and Georgina and Alyssa agree that he's "phoned it in" this week. However, he's called safe, leaving Layana and Alexander in the bottom two. Alexander is chastised for under-designing, despite his costume background, as well as designing old. Layana finds herself in the bottom 3 a third straight week, with the judges declaring her dress "a sale rack" dress, but she is saved, and Alexander is eliminated.
- Guest Judge: Kesha and Brad Goreski
- WINNER: Asha
- ELIMINATED: Alexander
Episode 9: A Touch of Style
Original airdate: April 7, 2016
The designers meet Alyssa Milano at the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, MCU Park, where they are tasked with designing a high end athleisure inspired look to be sold in Alyssa's Touch athletic wear line. Layana and Sam both express excitement over this task, given their extensive experience with athleisure wear, and several of the designers acknowledge that the two of them have a huge edge in this challenge. At Mood, Kini and Sam end up buying the same mesh (which Sam used in the previous challenge) and many of the designers see it as a show down between the two, given their season long feud.
After his critique, Ken exits the workroom with three hours left in the day, to the bewilderment of the designers, some of who see it as a "diva" move. When he returns to the workroom the next day, he explains that he felt as though he was about to have a meltdown, and needed to take some time to rest so as not to subject his fellow designers to his frustrations. However, he is very far behind, and is unable to complete work up to his usual standard.
On the runway, Asha, Dom, and Kini are on top, and Ken, Sam, and Layana fall to the bottom, despite the experience the latter two have with athleisure wear. Dom and Asha are praised for really making high end inspired looks, whereas Kini is praised for creating something easily salable within Alyssa's line, although Georgina bemoans the pedestrian quality of the two pieces (a T-shirt and an ill fitting pair of jeans) underneath his stellar jacket. Despite this, Kini is named the winner of the challenge for his very marketable jacket, which will be reproduced for "Touch by Alyssa Milano."[4]
On the bottom, Georgina is shocked to learn that Ken is the designer of his garment, and the panel agrees the look is too pedestrian and horribly constructed. Layana is commended for her intricate leggings, but the judges see it more as work out clothing, and they also raise issue with how flattering the pieces are. Sam's critique is not so clear--Alyssa and Kristin both see the look as much too dressed up for a baseball game, whereas Isaac claims that it's his favorite look on the runway, and Georgina argues that this is exactly the kind of dress she would wear to a game, despite not liking the blue under layer beneath the mesh. The argument continues into deliberation, where Isaac and Georgina praise Sam for making a statement, but Alyssa sees it as a slap in the face for ignoring the confines of the challenge. Sam is ultimately declared safe, leaving Layana and Ken as the bottom two. Despite his inferior look, the judges decide that Ken deserves another chance given the number of times Layana has been in the bottom two, and Layana is eliminated.
