The Redcliffe Dolphins are a rugby league team from the city of Redcliffe in Queensland, Australia. The Redcliffe Dolphins were founded in 1947, accepted into the Brisbane Rugby League premiership in 1960, and since 1996 have played in the Queensland Cup.

History

Redcliffe District Rugby League Football Club Inc. was founded on 27 February 1947, and in its first year entered Under 17, Reserve Grade and First Grade teams into the Sandgate Suburban Rugby League competition. Through the 1950s Redcliffe also played in the Kilcoy, Murrumba and Geraghty Cup competitions. On 19 November 1959 Redcliffe received full district club status and was accepted into the Brisbane First Grade competition.

Throughout the 1960s, a number of famous players came through the ranks of the Dolphins to represent Queensland and Australia, including Trevor Harken and Arthur Beetson. Redcliffe won the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership for the first time in 1965.

In 1972 Redcliffe were coached by former Kangaroo Ken Day. Redcliffe's halfback Greg Oliphant was selected to go on the 1978 Kangaroo tour but did not play in any Test matches.

Australian national coach Frank Stanton coached Redcliffe in 1980.

The Redcliffe club won further premierships in 1994 and 1996 and has appeared in seven Queensland Cup grand finals, making it the most successful team in that competition.

In the 2000s a new National Rugby League team to be based on the Gold Coast was going to call itself the Gold Coast Dolphins. This was decided against after the Redcliffe Dolphins threatened legal action. The team was ultimately decided to be named the Gold Coast Titans. The Dolphins won the 2006 Queensland Cup, beating Toowoomba in the grand final at Suncorp Stadium under the coaching of Anthony Griffin.[1]

2015 New Stadium | Redcliffe Dolphins has revealed plans for a $12 million stadium at Dolphin Oval The Village Motors Redcliffe Dolphins dream of a stadium at Dolphin Oval took another step to becoming a reality yesterday when Prime Minister Tony Abbott pledged $4m in funding for the project. Mr Abbott was on hand at Dolphin Oval yesterday to make the announcement during the halftime break of the in trust Super Club match against the Souths Logan Magpies. Upon arrival the Prime Minister visited corporate guests of the football club including sponsors,[2] Directors and club staff.

A media address was made from the top of one of the iconic hills of Dolphin Oval where Mr Abbott informed local media and national television groups he was about to make it public knowledge that the Dolphins have been successful in applying for funding. The club had asked for $6 million in funding, after securing $3 million from Moreton Bay Regional Council. Dolphins chief executive Tony Murphy said the club was grateful for the $4 million in Federal Government funding. "We're really happy with that," Mr Murphy said. The Prime Minister made time to visit with rugby league supporters around the grounds before the halftime siren blew. President Bob Jones, Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland and MP Luke Howarth joined Mr Abbott on stage at the halftime break. Addressing the crowd Mr Abbott said it was an investment in jobs, growth and the local community. "Already, the Dolphins precinct is the second biggest employer on the Redcliffe Peninsula.

The upgrade will generate hundreds of additional jobs - not only construction positions but also new, ongoing jobs in hospitality, marketing, cleaning and maintenance," he said. "The new stadium will be able to accommodate 10,000 people. There will be covered seating, upgraded change rooms and a recreation area for schools and junior player camps. "Sports teams and their fans won't be the only beneficiaries. The upgrade is part of a long-term plan to create a precinct on Brisbane's Northside that will be able to host concerts and trade shows." Mr Howarth said: "This Commonwealth funding is a big win for jobs, small business, tourism and the local community. It was hard to secure but with the support of local people I am pleased it has come through as it will help our region". The announcement comes after submissions for federal government funding from the Redcliffe District Rugby League Football Club. Since the end of 2014, a public campaign by local newspaper the Redcliffe & Bayside Herald was taken up by the Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth - both long time supporters of the Dolphins.
