Robert Hiscox

Robert Hiscox is a British businessman and philanthropist. He was the chairman of Hiscox Ltd, the Lloyd's of London underwriter for 43 years, until his retirement in 2013. He is now honorary president. He was also deputy chairman of Lloyd's between 1993 and 1995 and helped save it from the brink of collapse.[1]

Career

Robert Hiscox was the son of Ralph Hiscox, who founded Hiscox Ltd in 1946. He was educated at Rugby School and Cambridge University, where he received a bachelor's degree in economics and law.[2][3] He joined Hiscox Ltd as an underwriter in 1965, in fine art and personal accident insurance.[2]

His father died in 1970, and he took over, with Anthony Roberts the other co-founder, moving aside.[2]

He was the chairman for 43 years, until his retirement in 2013. He is now honorary president.[4]

Art collector

Hiscox is a prominent supporter of art in the UK. He is patron to several contemporary British artists including Andy Goldsworthy, John Virtue and Henry Hudson.[5]

He has a personal collection, that includes paintings by Frank Auerbach, and has also collected for the Hiscox collection that has been running since the 1970s.[6]

Philanthropy

Hiscox is chairman of the Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust, which provides home security service for elderly, vulnerable and disadvantaged people throughout Wiltshire.[7] He has hosted the Wiltshire Steam and Vintage Rally annually in June for over ten years.[8] In 2014, he saved the White Horse Bookshop on Marlborough High Street from closing.[9]

Personal life

Hiscox is married with five children and lives in Wiltshire. His five sons are Renshaw, Fred, Milo, Henry and Sidney.[3]
