Sandra Hanington

Sandra Hanington is the current Master of the Royal Canadian Mint (President and CEO). She was appointed to this position on February 11, 2015. She is only the fourth woman to serve in this capacity. Prior to her appointment, she was a member of the Board of Directors of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in 2014.^[1]

Career

She has also served on the Board of Directors of Extendicare, Inc. In 1999, she joined BMO Financial Group and served as Vice-President, Insurance.^[2] For three consecutive years, beginning in 2007, Hanington was named by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN) as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women. Also a certified member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, she holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of Waterloo and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Toronto.

Charitable work

Hanington was the co-founder and board director of Jack.org, an organization dedicated to mental health awareness for Canadian youth. The charity is named in honour of her son, Jack, who died by suicide while in his first year of studies at Queen’s University in 2010.^[3] Jack.org is aimed at students between the ages of 15 and 24. Seventy-one chapters have been started across Canada. Hanington raises approximately $1.6 million annually to fund the project. ^[4] She has also served on the board of Kids Help Phone.
