Schoenherr Road (/ˈʃeɪnər/ SHAYN-ər) is a major thoroughfare on the east side of the Metro Detroit area in the United States. Its southern terminus is at McNichols Road (near M-3, Gratiot Avenue) in the city of Detroit, Michigan. It is a paved road until 26 Mile Road. It is a dirt road north of 26 Mile and terminates north at 29 Mile Road.
Schoenherr Road is a divided highway between Metropolitan Parkway to north of M-59 (Hall Road).
Name
Schoenherr Road is named after a German farmer who arrived in southeastern Michigan in 1840. The Schoenherr family owned a large amount of farmland that was bought up for the road's construction. The family's patriarch helped to establish Detroit. Much of the farmland is now Detroit Metro Airport. The last pieces of this land were purchased to build Sterling Heights High School. Family members still own land and reside in other parts of Michigan, Massachusetts, Florida, and Maryland.
History
Until the late 1980s, Schoenherr Road did not exist between Utica Road and Clinton River Road, about a quarter mile span. That changed shortly before the closing of Kleino Bridge which was about an eighth of a mile west of Schoenherr Road.
