Shane Emmett
Shane Emmett (born 4 January 1976) is an Australian award-winning actor, presenter and film-maker. Emmett is the younger brother of the late actress, Belinda Emmett.
Early life
Emmett was born in Gosford, NSW to Michael and Laraine Emmett and grew up in Umina Beach on the Central Coast of New South Wales. He is the third of four children (Lesley, Belinda and Matthew). Emmett attended St John The Baptist primary school in Woy Woy and St Edward's Christian Brothers College and Corpus Christi College, graduating in 1993. Along with his sister, Shane was greatly influenced by his maternal grandfather, James Sakey who was a Big Band jazz singer of the 1960s.
Career
Initially, Emmett wanted to pursue a career in journalism and completed a degree in Communications (BMedia) at Macquarie University in 1998 while Belinda's career was well under way with roles in Hey Dad..! and Home and Away. It wasn't until he performed in several short films as part of his study that Emmett realised his passion was for performing, not journalism. He promptly began pursuing a career in acting.
An accomplished singer and dancer, Emmett began his career in musical theatre, gaining recognition in 2003 for his performance of the lead Frank Marlow in the musical Get Happy in Sydney.[1] Emmett is also known for his performance as Frank Sinatra in the musical From Here To Eternity, Marius in Les Misérables and most recently, Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. Just a month after his sister Belinda died after a long battle with cancer, Emmett performed at the annual Carols in the Domain (2006). His emotional rendition of "One Sweet Day" (a song previously sung by his sister at the Carols) became the highlight of the night with footage of Belinda singing behind him.[2]
Emmett is better known for his television roles over the last two decades, playing Aiden O'Hara in All Saints (1999), Colin Lowndes in Rush (2009), Dr Patrick in Offspring (2010) and Mark Gilmour in Home and Away (2011). Since then he has gone on to play the editor of The Australian Max Newton in the biographical miniseries Power Games: The Packer-Murdoch War and Clayton Timms in the Universal TV series Precinct 13.[3]
Emmett is also known for his work as a presenter on the television morning show 9am with David & Kim (2009) as well as Good Morning Australia, GMA and The Morning Show in 2009 and 2011.[4]
Emmett has performed across a wide range of leading roles in a variety of mediums ranging from quirky comedies to drama and thrillers.
Film-Making
An accomplished and award winning film-maker, offscreen Emmett has produced and created a number of internationally recognised short films with his filmmaking partner Jason Van Genderen. He won both 'Best Film' and 'People's Choice Award' in Tropfest New York in 2008 with the film "Mankind Is No Island". The film was shot entirely on a cell phone and won Best Short Documentary at the Inside Film Awards in 2009.[5] The team have made 11 films together that have screened all over the world and won numerous awards.
