Shane R. Jimerson, Ph.D., is a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology and a nationally-certified school psychologist.[1] He is recognized by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress as a board-certified expert and diplomate, and is included in its international registry of experts in traumatic stress specializing in children, families and schools.[2] Jimerson is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 16 (School Psychology).

Education and academic career

Jimerson earned a B.A. in psychology with a minor in education from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992. He earned an M.A. in Child Development in 1994 and doctoral degrees in school psychology and child development in 1997 from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

Research

Jimerson’s publications and presentations have provided insight into the developmental pathways of school success and failure; the efficacy of early prevention and intervention programs (grade retention, among others); school psychology internationally; developmental psychopathology, and school crisis prevention and intervention.[1]

Jimerson is lead editor of The Handbook of School Violence and School Safety: International Research and Practice (2012, Routledge),[3][4] co-editor of Best Practices in School Crisis Prevention and Intervention (2012, National Association of School Psychologists)[5] and lead editor of The Handbook of Bullying in Schools: An International Perspective (2009, Routledge),[6][7] The Handbook of International School Psychology (2007, SAGE Publishing)[8] and The Handbook of Response to Intervention: The Science and Practice of Assessment and Intervention (2007, Springer Science).[9] He co-authored School Crisis Prevention and Intervention: The PREPaRE Model (2009, National Association of School Psychologists),[10][11] the five-book grief-support group curriculum series The Mourning Child Grief Support Group Curriculum (2001, Taylor and Francis),[12] Identifying, Assessing, and Treating Autism at School (2006, Springer Science),[13] Identifying, Assessing, and Treating Conduct Disorder at School (2008, Springer Science),[14] Identifying, Assessing, and Treating PTSD at School (2008, Springer Science)[15] and Identifying, Assessing, and Treating ADHD at School (2009, Springer Science).[16]

Curriculum

In collaboration with other school-psychology researchers and a filmmaker Jimerson created the Promoting Positive Peer Relationships Bullying-Prevention Program, which includes curricula for the classroom, professional development and parent and community outreach.[17]

Editorial positions

Jimerson is an editor of School Psychology Quarterly,[24][25] has been an editor of The California School Psychologist,[26] associate editor of School Psychology Review,[27] served on the editorial boards of the Journal of School Psychology,[28] School Psychology Review and School Psychology Quarterly, and reviews manuscripts for Psychology in the Schools,[29] Review of Educational Research[30] and Journal of Educational Psychology.[31] He is lead editor of the Developmental Psychopathology at School book series published by Springer Science.[32]

Awards

Jimerson’s service to Division 16 of the American Psychological Association resulted in his receiving Division 16 Outstanding Service Awards in 2005 and 2010.[33] In addition, he received the President’s Award of Excellence from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) in 2006 for his contributions to the PREPARE school-crisis prevention and intervention curriculum.[34]

Jimerson received Best Research Article awards from the Society for the Study of School Psychology in 1998 and 2000. He received the 2001 Outstanding Article of the Year Award from the National Association of School Psychologists’ School Psychology Review. That year, Jimerson was also elected to membership in the Society for the Study of School Psychology. His scholarship was also recognized by the American Educational Research Association with its 2002 Early Career Award in Human Development. Jimerson and his UCSB research team received the 2003 Outstanding Research Award from the California Association of School Psychologists. That year, he also received the Lightner Witmer Early Career Contributions Award from Division 16 (School Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.[35] Jimerson and his team also received the 2004 Outstanding Research Award from the California Association of School Psychologists. In 2006, he received the President’s Award for Exemplary Contributions from the California Association of School Psychologists.[36] In 2007, Jimerson was elected a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 16 (School Psychology). He received the 2010 Outstanding Contributions Award from the American Psychological Association, Division 16 (School Psychology). Jimerson presented the 2012 Evan Brown Distinguished Lecture at the University of Nebraska, Omaha,[37] and received the 2012 Ronda Talley Distinguished Leader and Advocate Award from Indiana University.[38] His research continues to highlight the impact of early experiences on subsequent development, emphasizing the importance of research informing professional practice to promote the social and cognitive competence of children.
