Shilpi Marwaha is an Indian theatre and cinema actor.[1] She is a theatre activist, and has acted in many stage drama productions with theatre director Arvind Gaur.[2] She is also known for her social activism through street plays.[3] She acted in Raanjhanaa film as Rashmi, Abhay Deol's sister/[4] Her next film is Bhoomiyude Avakashikal (The Inheritors of the Earth), directed by T. V. Chandran
Personal life and background
Marwaha studied for her Masters in Commerce from Kamla Nehru College, University of Delhi. She was active in campus theatre. She did many street and stage plays in DU.[5]
Acting in Theatre
Marwaha started her career as a theatre actor in Delhi with Asmita Theatre Group.She trained under eminent theatre director Arvind Gaur.She participated in his theatre workshop in college. Marwaha has worked with Asmita Theatre group for 7 years,[6] and is a core member, coordinating theatre workshops. with theatre director Arvind Gaur.[7] Her major plays are Bertolt Brecht's Ramkali The Good Person of Szechwan, Mahesh Dattani's Final Solutions and 30 days in September, Girish Karnad's Rakt Kalyan, Swadesh Deepak's Court Martial, Rajesh Kumar's Ambedkar aur Gandhi, Mohan Rakesh's Lehro ke Rajhans, Ashok Lal's Ek Mamooli aadmi, Unsuni (based on Harsh Mandar's book & scripted by Mallika Sarabhai), Dario Fo's adaptation 'Operation Three Star' based on Accidental death of an anarchist, Govind Purushottam Deshpande's Raastey,[8] Dario Fo's Can't Pay won't Pay (Hindi adaptatipn by Amitabh Srivastava) and Mahesh Bhatt's The Last Salute, written by Rajesh Kumar.
Street Theatre
Shilpi Marwaha acted in more than 35 major street plays with Asmita Theatre, based on social issues—like corruption,atrocities on women,Violence,[9] gender issues,domestic worker, street vendor, Garibi, drugs, road rage, Dastak, domestic violence, inter-faith, child labour, budget, female foeticide, child education etc. Marwaha is also active in Social Awareness movement with Asmita Theatre.She actively participated in women's safety movement, raise voice for domestic workers and anti corruption movement etc.[10]
