Shiromani Akali Dal (disambiguation)
The Shiromani Akali Dal (Punjabi: ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ, translation: Supreme Akali Party) is a Sikh nationalist political movement and group of political parties based in Punjab.
Parties in Punjab
- Shiromani Akali Dal led by Sukhbir Singh Badal, recognized by the Election Commission of India as the original descendant of the original party.
- Shiromani Akali Dal (Longowal) headed by Surjit Singh Barnala (former CM), it was founded in 2004, the party has now forged an alliance with CPI, CPM and PPP to gain prominence in Punjab.
- The Akali Dal (1920), led by former Punjab Assembly Speaker Ravi Inder Singh.[1]
- Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) led by Simranjit Singh Mann was founded in the late 1980s and has been a strong advocate for Sikh rights and self-determination through the formation of an independent Sikh state, Khalistan.
- United Akali Dal led by Bhai Mokham Singh, it was floated on 22 November 2014 at Amritsar by leaders of United Sikh Movement and Insaaf Lehar.
Parties outside Punjab
- Shiromani Akali Dal Delhi: a splinter group which was formed in 1999 in Delhi due to ideologic differences emerging due to Badal's coalition with RSS and Hindu nationalists(BJP).
- Haryana State Akali Dal: a splinter group formed due to afforementioned reasons by Sikhs in 1999 in neighbouring state of Haryana.
- Shiromani Akali Dal (UK): Part of SAD (badal) formed to represent and mobilise Sikh support from England.
Former Parties
- Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal led by Gurcharan Singh Tohra, reunited with the SAD (Badal) in 2003.
- Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) led by Sardar Kuldip Singh Wadala, reunited with SAD (Badal) in 2004.
- Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthik) led by Amarinder Singh, and later merged with Congress in 1997.
