The South Indians' Welfare Society, predominantly abbreviated as S.I.W.S was founded in 1934 with an objective to provide educational facilities to the local population. Initially, the society started a Primary School at Shivaji Park, Dadar in 1934 and another at Matunga in 1936. SIWS is a combination of NR Swamy College of Commerce and Economics and Smt Thirumalai College of Science. Later, a high school was started to meet the growing needs of its own students of the Primary Schools with the first batch passing the S.S.C Examination in 1947. Presently the Primary and Secondary Schools of the Society have a student strength of 4000. In 1976, a Junior College of the Commerce Stream was begun with a view to provide higher education to a section of its own students at the School. This was followed by the opening of a Degree College in Commerce and Economics in June 1980.

The junior and degree College classes are conducted in their own building equipped with facilities. In April 1983, the first batch of students appeared for their TYBCom Degree Examination of the Mumbai University. In the year 1988-89, the Society started the Junior College in Science attached to the Degree College with well equipped laboratories. This was soon followed by the Degree College of Science affiliated to the University of Bombay from June 1990 and thus came the Smt.Thirumalai College of Sciences. The first batch of Students appeared for TYBSc in April 1993. The College ever since has grown from strength to with more branches being added.

Courses Offered

S.I.W.S is a premier Institution having a glorious history of over 32 years, to be proud of. It has been established with a sole objective of promoting cultural, educational and professional excellence among the younger generations. The college today, has grown as an institution of mark by offering a wide range of courses viz., B.Com, B.Sc, M.Com and M.Sc. In the year 2000, the institution crossed a milestone when it started specialized professional courses, in the field of Management (BBI & BMS). These courses have evoked a huge response from all quarters.

Vision

South Indian Welfare Society (S.I.W.S) envisages the creation of a Centre of Excellence in Higher Learning that is engaged in academic empowerment through continuous quality enhancement.

Vision and Mission of the college have been displayed at prominent places to help the stakeholders understand objectives of the institution and organize to translate them into action. Vision and Mission statements are included in the teacher’s academic record diaries, science journals and personal diaries.

Considering the contribution of SIWS College, institution was accredited by NAAC with B.

Infrastructure

The college has a well established library which caters to the needs of the students, research scholars and the faculty. The library is situated on the fourth floor of the main building of the college. It has a catalogue system to access reading materials. An open rack system along with guide cards on them for an easy access to the books is available for teachers as well as students to do their project work.The libraries provide home lending facilities to the final year students. Other sections avail of library facilities from the central library. Prompt responses of the college library to meet emerging needs of various departments ensure easy access to its various facilities. The college canteen plays an important role in promoting healthy foods and creating a college culture of healthy eating. This can extend beyond the college environment and influence food choices within the family and community and enhance the social and multicultural aspects of food and eating. The canteen is situated on the ground floor behind the college building premises. The food provided within the college environment has a considerable influence on the development of students' long-term eating habits, food preferences and attitudes towards food. It tends to be the most popular place on campus, not only for refreshment but also for student bonding, discussions and even work on assignments and projects.

RESONANCE

RESONANCE, a Tech fest of S.I.W.S. College was started in the year 2008.

Every year Resonance blasts a spiritual magic on the folks of Mumbai and ever participating students from various colleges.

RESONANCE witnesses a huge ground of events which provides opportunities to one and all. Students from various colleges use this platform to showcase their talents in our college. Many reputed firms and organizations support the spirit of I.T. and C.S Department of S.I.W.S College and sponsor this festival.Events ranging from technical nature to the apps common among the youngsters adds to the bloom of Resonance.Each year, RESONANCE records foot polls of many students.

Our Star Events- “8085 Coding, Dubsmash, Eidetic Testing, AV Gash,” and many more remain the center of attraction for the participants. Other events viz: Track the output, War of Languages, Webstruction, Poster Fashioning, Circuit Engineering, Hard shoot, Animatronics , LAN Gaming etc. add to the hype of Resonance.

The crew of Resonance is successful in making the event a huge and glamorous fest of our college with the never ending support of an enthusiastic crowd and our teachers.
