St. Andrew's Episcopal School is a coeducational college preparatory independent school for preschool through grade twelve, located in Montgomery County, Maryland. Grades 3-12 are located on the Postoak Road Campus at 8804 Postoak Road in Potomac, Maryland. The Potomac Village Campus (Lower School campus), for preschool through grade 2, is located at 10033 River Road in Potomac, MD. St. Andrew's balanced program challenges and support students, encouraging development of their full potential.[1]

General information

As of 2011, Total enrollment is 527, with an average of 12 students per class and a student to faculty ratio of 6:1.

Upper School students normally take five major academic courses per year. Courses include English, History, Language, Mathematics, and Science. In addition, Religion is required once each year. The whole school runs on a trimester schedule, each trimester lasting 12 weeks. Both year-length and trimester-length classes are available.

St. Andrew’s participates in the Bethesda Independent Schools’ Consortium that enables the school to extend its course offerings. Admission to a consortium course is competitive and open to eligible seniors. Each seminar meets three times per week before school. Students also attend one evening seminar per month to meet with experts related to the topics covered.

The school is also a member of College Entrance Examination Board, Cum Laude Society, National Association of College Admissions Counseling, National Association of Independent Schools, National Association of Episcopal Schools, and Potomac & Chesapeake Association of College Admissions Counseling. It is fully accredited by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools, Maryland State Department of Education, and Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Advanced Placement classes are available in 14 different disciplines.

Campus

In September 1998, the community dedicated the 19.2-acre (78,000 m2) campus in Potomac, Maryland and cut the ribbons on a 75,000-square-foot (7,000 m2) brand-new main building. St. Andrew’s Upper, Middle, and Intermediate Schools are located on a 20-acre campus in the suburban residential community of Potomac, approximately 15 miles from the District of Columbia

The land, once historic Clagett Farm and later the campus of Harker Preparatory School, occupies one of the highest points in Potomac. The original farmhouse was preserved and is used for administrative offices. Next to this house is scenic Bruder Garden (at right).

Classrooms include three Upper School laboratories and prep rooms, plus rooms outfitted for Middle School science.

MacDonald Hall, a multi-purpose theater/assembly/lunch space, features a stage and light/sound booth. There are two studios for the visual arts, including ceramics wheels and a kiln, and a darkroom.

The gymnasium, inherited from Harker Prep, serves as the basketball court and the location for all-school chapel. Facilities in a second athletic building, also inherited from Harker Prep, include a weight room and a dance studio that doubles as a wrestling room. The second athletic building has recently been renovated into the new intermediate school building. The previous intermediate school chapel in the main building was also renovated to become the dance studio.

There are two full fields, Hope Field and Brumbaugh Field, used for softball, baseball, lacrosse and soccer, as well as four tennis courts. In summer 2008, these fields were covered with synthetic FieldTurf, which allow more use in all weather and lowered maintenance costs.

A two-story library houses 14,000 volumes, an audio-visual classroom and several computer research stations, and is staffed by three librarians.

Extra-curricular

Trips: Each year, 6th, 7th and 8th graders enjoy fall getaways to such places as camp varsity and horizon. There is also a challenging fall "Leadership" weekend, available to students in 9th to 12th grades. Upper School spring sports teams often use Spring Break for travel and practice on warm weather fields.

Every year there are opportunities for trips abroad through different academic departments. Recent destinations have included Greece & Turkey, Honduras, and South Africa.

Clubs: Each week there is a designated period during the school day when students can participate in clubs of their choice. Some recent clubs have been: UNO Club, Recycling Club, Improv Club, Car Enthusiasts Club, Student Government Board, Model UN, and Roar Spirit Club.

Other: Students have many opportunities to perform on stage through school plays, art assemblies, a jazz/rock show, and a talent show.

Athletics

Students can choose to participate in varsity and junior varsity sports as well as several non-competitive physical education options. The school fields 51 interscholastic teams, including 19 Middle School teams and 32 JV and varsity teams, in 13 different sports. More than 250 Upper School students participate on these teams, with several students participating in two or three seasons

St. Andrew's has interscholastic teams in soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, golf, indoor track, equestrian and track and field. St. Andrew's also offers fitness, dance and other non-competitive athletic options.

The girls' varsity teams compete in the Independent School League (ISL), and the boys' varsity teams compete in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAC).
