St Ignatius Church, Wishaw

St Ignatius Church is a parish church of the Roman Catholic Church, located in the town of Wishaw in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is within the Diocese of Motherwell. The church building was constructed in 1865, and is a category A listed building. It was designed by George Goldie in a Gothic revival style.^[1] The Church now holds about 1100 residents every Saturday and Sunday. Prominent priests since the sixties include Mgr O'Donell, Fr Trench, Fr McGlinchey, Fr Morris, Canon McGovern. In the seventies it ran a lively altar boys section. The parishioners were not sociable at all. It was strange to see people disperse after Sunday mass without a thought of joining their neighbours for a refreshment. Also active svdp group who provided pass keepers. The church has an impressive air-powered organ. During the sixties and seventies, the redoubtable Mrs Kelly ran the choir. She was a very good teacher in the connected primary school. During the decades of ant-Catholic bigotry and discrimination in the town and wider area throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the parish was extremely let down by the church hierarchy failing to stand up and fight for their rights, or even to organize protest. The parish ran a troop of Scouts, the 9th Wishaw. The cub scouts were superbly organized by the parishioner Akela Nan Briody, who also ran the church stall.
