Sun Is Up is a song by Romanian dance/pop vocalist Inna extracted from her second studio album I Am the Club Rocker (2011). Written and composed by Play & Win members Sebastian Barac, Radu Bolfea and Marcel Botezan, it serves as the first release from her sophomore full-length record. However, in the United Kingdom, the single acts as an expansion for her already released debut studio album Hot (2009). A house record, "Sun Is Up" 's lyrics speak about a group of young people that party while the sun goes up by "putting their hands in the sky" and "getting in the rhythm".

"Sun Is Up" received mostly positive reviews from music critics, with Paul Lester from The Guardian citing that the song reminds of Boys Boys Boys by Sabrina.^[1] The single was officially sent to Romanian radio stations on June 29, 2010, where it became her second best-charting single, with it managing to peak at number-two on the airplay-based Romanian Top 100. Released to critical acclaim, "Sun Is Up" became an instant hit throughout Europe, reaching number-one in Bulgaria and the Romandie region of Switzerland while entering the top-ten in ten countries. Furthermore, the song reached the top-ten in Mexico and in the US Billboard Hot Dance/Mix Show Airplay, giving Inna her second US top ten dance hit after her number-one single "Hot".

The song sold an estimate of 2 million copies worldwide, while it was certified Gold in Italy and Switzerland by the Federation of the Italian Music Industry and the IFPI Switzerland, respectively, for selling 15,000 copies. Furthermore, it managed to sell 125,000 registered copies in France within a year.^[2]

Inna's official website announced on June 28, 2010 that two new songs entitled "Sun Is Up" and "Un Momento" were supposed to be released together as a "Hit Summer Pack". However, "Sun Is Up" premiered on Kiss FM on June 29, 2010 and "Un Momento" was released months later as a follow-up single to "Sun Is Up". In Romania, the song debuted at number thirty-four on the Romanian Top 100, with it setting a record for the highest-debut. Subsequently, it was sent to all format radios and made available for purchase at online retails. Early 2011, "Sun Is Up" was also released physically and digitally in France, while the German-speaking countries saw a spring release. During summer 2011, the single was sent to dance radio stations in North America, while in October 2011 it was released in Latin America. The song was never solicited to any radio station in Australasia, but was still part of the track list for Inna's second studio album in Japan, where it bubbled under the Japan Hot 100 in March 2012. "Sun Is Up" won the Eurodanceweb Award 2010, so it was declared the best song of 2011 by them. The single was included in the British compilation Now That's What I Call Music! alongside "Mr. Saxobeat" by Romanian singer Alexandra Stan.

The music video for "Sun Is Up" was shot on August 24, 2010 in Marbella, Spain by Alex Herron, who previously worked with Taio Cruz, Kesha ("Dirty Picture") and Basshunter ("Saturday"). A teaser of the clip was released on September 27, 2010 and shows Inna on a bed being privately photographed by the photographer of a photo shooting. The official music video of "Sun Is Up" finally premiered on September 30, 2010 on Inna's website and YouTube channel.^[3] The video begins with Inna walking cross a river in the middle of a forest dressed-up in green. Her preparation are then appearing helping her to get ready for a photoshooting with Tore Frisholm Jr. The next scene portrays Inna bathing and singing bare-naked in a jacuzzi bath, in front of a mountaine area. After Inna is showing dancing at a party, the sun is setting and Inna is shown at her home. There are cut-scenes with Frisholm picturing her privately. The video clip ends with Inna dressing a black dress while dancing in the party hall previously shown, and Inna and Frisholm making it out in the sunset. The video gained over one million views on YouTube in just one week. Furthermore, it has gained over 20,000,000 views as of August 2015. The clip of "Sun Is Up" debuted at number-three on the Romanian TV Airplay Chart, with it gaining a maximum number of 180 views per week.^[4]

Live performances

Inna performed "Sun Is Up" for the first time at the Romanian Music Awards 2010 in Craiova, Romania, in a medley with "Señorita", "10 Minutes" and "Amazing". On December 29, 2010, she sang "Sun Is Up" live at Kasho Club in Braşov, along with her hit singles "Hot", "Love", "Amazing" and "10 Minutes". Her first abroad performance of the song was at Fun Radio located in France. There, she premiered a song that was intended to be her newest single, "Got Me Goin'". Inna performed "Sun Is Up" during the Opening Ceremony of the 2011 NRJ Music Awards. Then, she lipsynched it during her INNA en Concert tour trough France and other European countries. On May 17, "Sun Is Up" was sung both as the opening song and encore song for her INNA: Live la Arenele romane gig in Bucharest, Romania. The opening act is called "Intro/Sun Is Up" and Inna made her appearance on the stage by levering from a helicopter. The song was performed live on September 16, 2011 at Piaṭa Sfatului in Braşov, Romania during the Romanian Music Awards 2011. After singing her rendition of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way", Inna got to the main stage (previously performing on a B-scene) to perform "Sun Is Up" and "Un Momento". The song was also lipsynched at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy next to Paris, France on November 26, 2011 during Starfloor 2011. It was Inna's opening number that night and she emerged from a giant gyroscopic square as she was backed by other dancers.

Accolades

"Sun Is Up" won the tenth edition of the Eurodanceweb Award and simultaneously Romania's best position in this competition. Previously, DJ Project's fourth position was considered the highest ranking ever reached by a Romanian artist. Inna received 24,601 votes on the fans-voting-pool and reached the third place when the voting was over, with it placing her behind Cliff Randall's "Change It All" (Poland, 37.140 votes) and Demet Akalin's "Tecrübe" (Turkey, 32.176 votes). Surprisingly, Inna's song placed atop the scoreboard after the fans' and a group of international journalists, music producers and disc jockey's results were combined to a final result.^[5] Furthermore, "Sun Is Up" brought one nomination during the NRJ Music Award ceremony (lost to Justin Bieber) and was named the best Romanian song from 2011 by the Balkan Music Awards. Subsequently, Inna won nods for herself during the Eska Awards, the Romanian Music Awards and the Viva Comet Awards.

Chart performance

"Sun Is Up" became an overwhelming hit in Romania and quickly charted on the native Romanian Top 100. The song entered the top-ten of the chart on October 31, 2010 due to the release of its music video. It reached its peak position at number-two on November 28, 2010, being only blocked by Smiley's "Love Is For Free" to peak atop the chart. "Sun Is Up" spent a total of eight weeks in the top-ten, becoming Inna's fifth top-ten single and her highest-charting song after "Amazing", which reached the number-one spot late 2009. The single has charted at number-twenty on the Slovakian Airplay Chart, where it became her second highest peaking single on the chart only behind "Love", which reached number-five. After "Amazing", the song became Inna's second number-one on the Bulgarian Airplay Chart. It reached the top position on November 21, 2010, but was succeeded by Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)" on the following week. However, "Sun Is Up" returned to number-one on December 5, 2010 for an additional week. It spent a total of twenty-three weeks inside the top forty. The song debuted at number-four on the French Digital Singles Chart on January 19, 2011. Furthermore, it became the second-highest debut of that week after Britney Spears's "Hold It Against Me", which opened at number-three. Due to its high digital sales, "Sun Is Up" was one of the songs to chart on the new official French Singles Chart which combines physical and digital sales, with it debuting there at number-five. After its physical release, "Sun Is Up" climbed up the chart and reached its peak position at number-two on March 6, 2011. The single is so far her best ranked song on the Swiss Singles Chart, as it charted on the third spot of the chart. Subsequently, "Sun Is Up" debuted directly at number-one on the Romandie region of Switzerland. It reached British radio stations and music channels seven weeks prior to its release. On April 15, the single was added to the B-Playlist on the UK's biggest radio station BBC Radio 1. On the week after its release, "Sun Is Up" charted at number-seventeen due to its digital downloads only. The next week it climbed to number fifteen, becoming Inna's third most successful song released in the United Kingdom. In Germany, "Sun Is Up" became Inna's highest-charting single on the Media Control Charts, debuting and peaking at number twenty-six on May 16, 2011.
