Coordinates: 3°04′11″N 101°36′25″E / 3.069703°N 101.606868°E / 3.069703; 101.606868The Sunway Lagoon is a theme park in Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Operated by Sunway Group, the park opened its door on 1992[1] and is officiated by then former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir bin Mohamad on 29 April 1993.[2] The 88 acres park is built 150 ft below ground level on a tin mining wasteland and currently has 90 attractions spread across six parks.[1]

Since its opening, the theme park has added Malaysia’s first surf simulator, the FlowRider on 2010;[3] Malaysia’s first 5D Waterplexx on 2012[4] and the world’s largest water ride, Vuvuzela on 2013.[5]

1992 Opens to public[1] with two-park attraction, the Water Park and the Dry Park.[6]
29 April 1993 Former Prime Minister, Tun Mahathir bin Mohamad officiated the opening of Sunway Lagoon.[7]
1994 The attraction, World of Adventure opened at Sunway Lagoon.
1995 Opening of Wild Wild West as part of Sunway Lagoon's Amusement Park, alongside of World of Adventure.
1997 Man-made Surf Beach launched.
2001 Sunway Lagoon introduced Waters of Africa as part of its Water Park to the public.
2006 The Extreme Park opened.[8]
2007 The scheduled opening of the park zoo, Wildlife Interactive Zoo.[9]
2008 Scream Park was added as the new park addition, in collaboration with the Lynton V Harris. There is 4 scare experiences, the theatre experience, Prison Break, the Rumah Hantu 3D and the Terror tunnel.[10]
2010 Launched of Sunway Lagoon's attraction, FlowRider, Malaysia’s first surf simulator.[3]
2012 The grand opening of the first Waterplexx 5D in Malaysia.[4]
2013
  • Sunway Lagoon introduced the world's largest water ride, Vuvuzela.[5]
  • In October, Sunway Lagoon debut Halloween theme festival, Nights of Fright.[11]
2015 A pair of white lions, Zola and Zuri added to the Wildlife Park.[12]
2016
  • In collaboration with Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN Asia), Sunway announced the opening of Asia’s first Nickelodeon themed attraction at Sunway Lagoon, Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon.[13]
  • In partnership with Lynton V. Harris, Sunway Lagoon announced the addition of The Ghostbusters Adventure Live! to its Scream Park.[14]
  • Sunway Lagoon unveiled the addition of White Tigers to its wildlife family.[15]

Attractions

Attraction Description
Water Park The first park to be introduced in the park and it features Waters of Africa with 13 attractions and Surf Beach with 9 attractions. The Waters of Africa has 2 water playground areas for young children, Kalahari Kids and Little Zimbabwe. Other water rides includes Cameroon Climb, African Phython, Congo Challenge, Vuvuzela and Waterplexx 5D. The Surf Beach has Flowrider, Surf Beach, Mushroom/Umbrella, Water Disco, Surf Deck, Harbour Deck, Islands, Promenade and Volcano.
Scream Park The Scream Park designed strictly for ages above 7 years old, provides 4 interactive "scare" experience by using audio, visual effects and live actors. The 4 scare attractions are Pontianak Theater of Fear, Horrorwood Studios, Zombie Apocalypse and The Ghostbusters Adventure Live!.
Amusement Park The park are divided to 2 sides, Wild Wild West with 4 rides and World of Adventure with 9 rides/ attractions. The rides at Wild Wild West include Colorado Splash, Grand Canyon River Rapids, Vultures and Butch Cassidy Trail. The World of Adventure features Pirate’s Revenge,Tomahawk, Lost City of Gold Scream Coaster, Apache Pots, Wagon Wheel, Carousel, Captain Kid’s Candyland, Captain Kid’s Playland and Malaysia’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge.
Extreme Park The Extreme Park features activities including painball, bungee trampoline, kayaking, paddle boat, swan ride, All-terrain vehicles (ATV), archery, flying fox, go kart, g-force and bungee jump.
Wildlife Park The Wildlife Park is an interactive and educational zoo with exotic, small and friendly animals from a range of birds, reptiles and mammals. The Wildlife Park is home to more than 140 species, with the pygmy marmoset and white lions among its latest additions.[16] Each of the animal sanctuaries has a different name such as Pet Village, Jungle Trail, Aviary, Tropical Enclosure, Tree Top Terrace and Bird Savannah.[16]
Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon The first Nickelodeon-themed land in Asia,[17] opens with 14 new rides[18] that cater for all ages. Among the attractions are the SpongeBob Splash Adventure, Primeval, Jungle Fury and Monsoon 360. The park also feature green slime at a set hour during the "Great Slime Deluge". Visitors can meet Nickelodeon characters: SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, Dora the Explorer, Boots and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.[13]

Concerts and events

Sunway Lagoon has hosted some of the international lifestyle, music and sporting events including MTV World Stage (2009 to 2015[19]) and Quiksilver Revolution Tour (2006 and 2008). Other concert hosted are deadmau5 (2011),[20] The Native Tour by OneRepublic, Pitbull (2011)[21] and many more.
