Background
Shortly after the release of Basic Instinct (2010), Ciara publicly asked to be released from her label Jive. In July 2011, reports circulated that Ciara had reunited with L.A. Reid by signing with his record label Epic Records.[1] Reid had previously signed Ciara to LaFace Records during the beginning of her career and was a factor in the commercial success of her debut album, Goodies (2004). Billboard magazine went on to confirm her move to Epic in September 2011.[2] In February 2012, Ciara revealed that she had begun recording her album[3] Ciara released three singles from the album "Sweat" featuring rapper, 2 Chainz, "Sorry" and "Got Me Good" all of which were released on iTunes, the three singles were later scrapped from the album with "Body Party" being released as the album's lead single.
Composition
“I’m rapping on that song. It’s me with a little twist. So as opposed to saying it’s another name, an alter ego, it’s like no, it’s featuring me. I can be very silly—I like to have a lot of fun.
—Ciara speaking on featuring on her own song.[4]
"Super Turnt Up" is the seventh song of the album. The song was co-produced and wrote by Ciara herself and long time collaborator Jasper Cameron who has previously worked with Ciara on songs including Promise (2006), "I Don't Remember" (2009) and most recently Sorry (2012). "Super Turnt Up" is credited for featuring herself because the song features Ciara rapping.[5]
"Super Turnt Up" contains "90s R&B", "soft tones" and "gleaming harp" compared to that of Brandy Norwood and Monica‘s single “The Boy Is Mine” (1998).[6] Ciara's rapping technique was compared to that of Kandi‘s “Don’t Think I’m Not”, Ciara's vocals contains "writhes" that "wraps around the song’s backing rhythm" Ciara's voice was praised and compared to that of later American singer Aaliyah.[7]
"Super Turnt Up" is a fast-tempo R&B song the song lasts for four minutes and twenty eight seconds. Lyrically, it speaks about how "her man gets her in the mood", the song contains seductive "cooing". The first verse in which Ciara sings introduces the concept of the song: "I can't lie/ I'm super turnt up/ Boy your love got me super turnt up."[8] Later in the song Ciara raps, the rapping was noted sounding similar to that of female rapper Nicki Minaj. The rap verse contains lyrics such as : "Top notch/ Got me so high/ Them other broads can't even see me."[9]
Critical reception
After the album's release Idolator reviewed the song and gave "Super Turnt Up" general acclaim naming the song as "The beating heart of the record" continuing to praise it saying it is one of her "best songs ever" furthermore Idolator called the song "smooth but furious, layered and dynamic, with Ciara rapping against herself against trap-and-blues production".[10]
Music video
“I did video snippets of many of the songs on the album for my fans so they can have the best experience of my music possible,” I wanted my fans to see the music for the first time while they are also hearing it.”
—Ciara speaking on the concept for releasing multiple videos.[11]
Initially Ciara planned to release five video snippets for five of the album's songs, however "Super Turnt Up" was released as the sixth and final short promotional video on July 12, 2013.[12] The video was directed by Hannah Lux Davis and is features Ciara flaunting her fashion style in the black and white video clip, wearing a “XIV Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn” coat and thigh-high boots.[13]
