Syed J. R. Mudassir Husain (Bengali: সৈয়দ জে আর মোদা‍চ্ছির হোসেন; born 1940) is a former Chief Justice of Bangladesh.^[1]

Family background

Mr. Husain is one of the direct descendants of 'Sipah Salar' (commander-in-chief) Hazrat Syed Nasir Uddin who came as one of the companions of Hazrat Shah Jalal to preach Islam in Sylhet about seven hundred years ago. His father Late Syed Md. Mumidul Husain was one of the Senior Advocates of Habigonj District Bar. His mother Syeda Hosne-Ara-Akther Khatun is the second daughter of late Syed Muhammadullah, a powerful Zaminder of village Sultanshi of Tarap Pargana of Habigonj district. His uncle Late Syed A. B. Mahmud Hossain was the Chief Justice of Bangladesh.

Career

He was graduated and obtained LLB Degree from the Dhaka University in 1962 and 1964 respectively. He was enrolled as an Advocate of the then High Court of East Pakistan on 24 November 1965 and also enrolled as an Advocate of the Appellate Division in 1980. He was a part-time Lecturer in the Central Law College, Dhaka from 1966 to 1978. He was the Examiner and Question Setter of the Department of Law of the University of Dhaka.

He was a reporter of Bangladesh Law Reports from the year 1973 to 1977. In 1977 he was appointed as an Assistant Attorney General for Bangladesh and aft r two years promoted to the position of Deputy Attorney General for Bangladesh.

In 1992, he was elevated to the bench and sworn in as a Judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. Being a Judge of the High Court Division, he was a member and subsequently the Chairman of the Advisory Board under Article 33 of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He represented Bangladesh at the Conference held at Geneva and Washington in July 2003 under the auspices of World Intellectual Property Organization.

Justice Syed J.R. Mudassir Husain was elevated to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on 5 March 2002. His Lordship was sworn in the office of the Chief Justice of Bangladesh on 27 January 2004.

Participated in conferences

After his assumption to the office of Chief Justice, he attended the 10th SAARCLAW Conference/Seventh Chief Justices Conference held in Karachi, Pakistan in February 2004.

He participated in a Tour program visiting USA and UK and observed Legal Reforms & overall development made in those countries in the field of Case Management & Court Administration.

Justice Husain attended the 11th Conference of Chief Justices' of Asia and the Pacific 19th Law Asia Conference held in Australia from 20 March 2005 to 24 March 2005.

He participated in the 8th SAARC Chief Justices' and 11th SAARC Law Conference held in Para, Bhutan from 10 June 2005 to 1 June 2005.

He attended the 22nd Congress on the Law of the World held in Beijing and Shanghai in China from 4–10 September 2005. He also visited Philippines to participate in the International Conference on Law Reforms and Showcase held in Manila.

Being an official guest of Her Majesty's Government to the U.K., his lordship visited U.K. in February 2006 for participating meetings with the lord Chief Justice of U.K. and other Judges of the Family Division of U.K. High Court.

During those meetings he discussed with the Judges of U.K. various matters including ongoing reform activities and Cross Border Protection for child and victims of the forced marriage.
