TVShow Time is an online service centered exclusively on television series. It enables users to get information and comment on the shows they follow, featuring various segments of information related to them, such as new episodes release dates (which the site shows with a countdown clock), and various options based on user reaction.[2]
In spite of the site's French origin and a large number of users from the same country, it has a considerable amount of users who comment in English.
Its mobile app is available for Android and iOS,[3] and has been downloaded more than 1,000,000 times on Google Play as of April 2016.[4]
Funding
TVShow Time was co-funded in 2011 in Paris by Antonio Pinto.[5]
Features
Profile
Every registered user on TVShow Time has a profile. This profile displays three tabs: feed, friends and stats. There are several customization options that can be accessed through the site's app.
- TV shows list: In this tab, a poster corresponding to every show that the user follows is shown. These can by sorted in the following categories: up to date, continuing and ended. In the lower part of the poster, there is a green progress bar that illustrates the user's progression on the show. If the user has not marked as watched any episode of a certain show, its poster has no bar.
- Feed: Every comment made by a user is grouped on a list on his or her profile page. The access to these comments by other users depends on whether they have marked those episodes as watched or not. If they have, they can see the comment, but if they have not, they see a warning message instead. This prevents users from reading unwanted spoilers. However, if the user wants to see a comment of an episode they have not seen, they can do so by simply clicking on a button.
- Following and Followers: These tabs display all the other users a user has connected with on the network. Every user can follow and be followed by others. The site allows Twitter and Facebook synchronization to find users.[6]
- Stats and badges: User profile features certain stats, such as a clock of how much time the user has spent watching TV. This clock shows an estimated amount of time based on the episodes the user has marked as watched and their duration. Another characteristic of the profile is the display of badges. Badges are rewards that every user gets when using TVShow Time. They are divided in two main categories: discovery badges and addiction badges. Discovery badges are given when the user makes use of the site's features for the first time. Addiction badges, on the other hand, are given to the user when he or she interacts with TV shows. These badges are: serial emotioner, serial actor voter, serial commentator, quick watcher and marathoner. Every badge is earned when an interaction is repeated three times, and can be upgraded if the interaction is repeated even more.
TV Show Page
TV show pages display general information about a show. They feature a big header with artwork from TheTVDB. Over this header, the page displays the name of the show and its valoration, based on user reactions, and links to the show's Twitter and Facebook pages. Below this, there's a short summary of the show's plot. Following the show's general information, there's a comment box in which the users can post their impressions and opinions of the show. However, the site restricts comments with spoilers on this page, as such comments should be made on episode pages.
In this page, there is also a ranking of the commentators whose comments have been liked the most, and a display of shows that, according to the community, are similar.
Episode Page
For every episode of every series on the site's database, there's an episode page in which the users are allowed to react to it. Similar to the TV show page, these pages feature the name of the episode and a short summary. This page also allows users to vote for their favorite character and chose from six "emotions" according to their reaction to the episode:
- Wow
- Good
- Fun
- Sad
- So-so
- Bad
Also, in this same page, users can vote for their favorite character and create memes from screenshots of the episode the site provides,[7] or their own images, which can also be GIFs.[8]
Explore and Genius
The site offers an explore feature which allows users to discover new shows according to different criterion, such as genre and popularity. Another feature, only accessible from the site's mobile app is Genius, which recommends shows to the user based on the shows on his or her library.
Activity
Through the site's app, users can see a feed of what shows the users they follow have seen recently. They can also see what shows they have added. These activities can be "liked" and commented on.
