Tim Williams has the world at his feet. Tipped for a top job in Cabinet, he is well on his way to becoming Premier. With a happy marriage, a good relationship with his teenage son and respect from his peers, his future is looking great. There is one little problem: 15 years ago, Tim had a brief, ill judged affair with drug-loving wild-child Nat Manning. The affair ended in pregnancy. After confessing to his wife Christine, they patched up their marriage and fought bitterly for custody of the child, Max. Nat moved to London and has barely been heard from since. Now 10 years on, she is back.

Vince's best friend Gabriel Lucas returns from overseas to stay, and his long-standing and underlying attraction to Vince's wife Ally is recognised by everyone, except for her. A struggle develops for Max between his step-mother Christine and his birth-mother Nat.

Vince stuns Gabriel when he invites his mistress Em on their skiing trip. But when she is injured, he must rely on Gabriel to cover for him so that Ally doesn't become suspicious of their affair. Nat drags Ally out of the house for a boozy night. Influenced by Nat's carefree attitude, Ally behaves out of character.

Ally questions Em's presence on the ski trip and Vince shrewdly lies, convincing Ally that Em is actually Gabriel's girlfriend. When a party at the dead man's house is interrupted by the police, Max calls Nat trying to avoid implicating his father, Tim. But this only builds Christine's insecurities over Nat's growing presence in Max's life.

Tim's loyalty is tested when he is tapped to become Health Minister, but only if he deposes his mentor, Pat Mahady. The parents hold a crisis meeting, in shock over their kids' involvement with the dead body. Vince buys political leverage with Tim by blackmailing political journo Bryan Dougherty to prevent the story breaking and Max unravels when Romeo wins Charlotte.

Vince is seized with jealousy when Ally confesses she kissed a guy on her night out with Nat. The teenagers are all sent to parent/child counseling sessions, with unexpected results and when Tim becomes aware of the toll his ascension has taken on his political mentor, Pat, he questions the value of his career.

Still reeling from the political crisis, Tim goes out on a boozy, flirtatious night with Nat, which devastates Christine. Gigi tells Ally that Em and Gabriel's relationship was a lie. Ally then confronts Gabriel about it, who admits that he has always loved her. Vince seduces a powerful woman, Nicky Barnham, who has a daughter at Gigi's school.

Confronted with a hospital crisis, Gabriel contacts Tim, who plays political hardball to secure more emergency funding. Ally is devastated when she uncovers Em and Vince's affair. She exposes Vince and takes refuge in a hotel with Nat. Now Max's girlfriend, Charlotte moves in with Tim and Christine.

Tim finds out through Em that Vince's shady dealings will compromise him politically and could destroy his career. With his marriage on the line, Vince struggles to manage his family, ignoring Tim's desire for confrontation. Nat finally elicits Tim's confession that he's still attracted to her. As the tension mounts between Max, Charlotte and Romeo, all the teenagers are involved in a car accident.

When the press seizes on Max's involvement in the car accident, Tim finds himself facing a political minefield. Nat pushes Ally to leave Vince permanently. When Gabriel declares his intentions to win Ally, Vince is galvanized into action. In the wake of the accident, all of Christine's mounting anger is unleashed. As pressure builds, the landscape is irrevocably transformed by an unexpected turn of events.
