The Coffee Song

"The Coffee Song" (occasionally subtitled "They've Got an Awful Lot of Coffee in Brazil") is a novelty song written by Bob Hilliard and Dick Miles, first recorded by Frank Sinatra in 1946.

The song caricatures Brazil's coffee surplus, claiming (among other things) that no other beverages are available, and that a politician's daughter was fined for drinking water. Snowclones on this phrase have been used in analyses of the coffee industry,[1][2][3] and of the Brazilian economy and culture.[4][5][6][7]

Sinatra re-recorded the song in 1960 for his inaugural Reprise release, Ring-a-Ding-Ding!

The song has been performed by (among others) Louis Prima, The Andrews Sisters, Sam Cooke, Rosemary Clooney, Eydie Gormé, Mike Doughty, Stan Ridgway, Soul Coughing, Osibisa, and the Muppets, Bob Dorough recorded the song for inclusion on Too Much Coffee Man, a CD of music based on the eponymous Shannon Wheeler character.

The Muppets performed the song as the opening number of a 1997 episode of Muppets Tonight.

Use in Media

The song is used to introduce the second segment of radio show "The Morning Drive" on Sirius XM NFL Radio hosted by Bob Papa.

The tune of the song was used on ITV's coverage of the 2014 Fifa World Cup, which was held in Brazil.

The song was sung by Miss Patty (played by actress Liz Torres) in Season 5, episode 10 of the Gilmore Girls.
