The International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers

The International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) is the global voice and authority for professional Interior Architects/Designers.[1] The sole international federating body for Interior Architecture/Design organizations, IFI acts as a global forum for the exchange and development of knowledge and experience, in worldwide education, research and practice.

Founded in 1963 in Copenhagen (Denmark) as a not-for-profit, limited liability company to expand the international network of professional Interior Architects/Designers, IFI represents designers, educators and industry stakeholders in the international design community in 110 countries on every continent, collectively representing practicing Interior Architects/Designers worldwide.

IFI is currently headquartered in New York City (USA) and connects the international community in order to further the impact, influence and application of the design of interiors, promote global social responsibility, and raise the status of the profession worldwide.

IFI is founded on five core values:

1. Lead the Interior Design discipline into the future

2. Further public awareness of the influence and impact of Interior Design

3. Connect the global Interior Architecture/Design profession and community to identify and provide design solutions to global problems

4. Establish and implement world standards and guidelines for the profession, education and research by establishing and adopting best practices

5. Educate the profession through actionable programs, events and publications

Interiors Declaration

On Friday 18 February 2011 in New York City, the delegation of the IFI DFIE Global Symposium proposed and signed a historic document, hereby known as the Interiors Declaration. Based on the affirmation that interior space is critical to the well-being and happiness of all humankind, the Declaration forms a unanimous agreement establishing the essential foundations and their advancement for Interior Architecture/Design worldwide.[2]

Now published in 11 languages, over 120 cities and countries globally have adopted or proclaimed the Interiors Declaration. This number continues to grow, as IFI members and the global community advocate for national and city governments all over the world to recognize the importance of Design and Interiors.

World Interiors Day

World Interiors Day (WID) is an annual event spearheaded by IFI and designed to bring Interior Architecture/Design into the spotlight. The event actively engages professionals, national organizations, design enthusiasts and the general public to explore creativity, imagination, vision and passion in relation to the role of Interiors in society, culture and our future built environments. It is officially celebrated the last weekend in May; however the entire month plays host to events that highlight merits of the interior profession and their impact on the quality of life.

WID is an international example of IFI and its global community coming together to recognize, appreciate and celebrate the significant work and contributions of Interior Architecture/Design. This event is a day to actively engage professionals and the public at large to explore their creativity, imagination, vision and passion in recognition of the role of Interior Architecture/Design in our society. WID events are planned by individuals and hosted all over the world, linked by a common theme chosen each year by the IFI membership to reflect the values of the industry as a whole.[3]

World Interiors for the Next Generation

The IFI World Interiors for the Next Generation (IFI WING) program is a worldwide educational endeavor involving Interior Architecture/Design workshops endorsed by IFI and sponsored by IFI supporters. Developed in 1999, initially as a 3-day intensive workshop, the IFI WING program continues as a competition which promotes the exchange of ideas and to encourage creativity among students working collaboratively with professional mentors, educators, local artists and craftsmen to explore the practice of design. The program encourages free spirit and imagination by encouraging young designers to unleash the unlimited possibilities of design innovation. IFI WING is a biennial competition that previews the shape of the future by recognizing and rewarding exceptional design talent. The winners are visionary design students who contribute innovative, forward-thinking design to meet the needs of the future. The program calls upon Interior Architects/Designers to submit solutions that bring value, relevance, responsibility, culture, business, knowledge and identity as stated by the IFI Interiors Declaration.[4]
