The One Academy of Communication Design (generally shortened to The One Academy) is an award-winning arts and design institute headquartered in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, with campuses in George Town, Penang and Beijing, China. It is renowned for establishing a strong working network with the real industry,[1] and has grown to become one of the top institutions known to have produced some of the best designers and artists around the region today.[2]

By winning The Asia Pacific Brands Foundation's The BrandLaureate awards for three consecutive years[3] namely Best Brand in Education in 2008[4] and 2009,[5] and Most Creative Brand in 2010,[6] as well as being named as the "Best Of The Best" creative institution of higher learning at the Adrenaline Student Creative Awards 2005 (Malaysia & Singapore),[7] it is acknowledged as one of the more prominent art, design and creative multimedia institutions in the region, living up to its "Masters Train Masters" philosophy.[8][9]

Many of its graduates have achieved success globally, for instance contributing computer graphics to Hollywood blockbusters such as Avatar, The Incredible Hulk, 2012, Life of Pi,[10][11] Snow White and the Huntsman, Marmaduke, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and Yogi Bear,[12] producing Batman illustrations for New York-based comics publisher DC Comics,[13] winning the D&AD[14] (Design and Art Direction) Award in London, as well as the 12th Animation Academy Awards[15] organised by Beijing Film Academy's Animation Academy in Beijing.

History

The One Academy was founded in 1991 by Tatsun Hoi and Veronica Ho, with a vision to address the acute shortage of a quality creative work force by developing and nurturing creative talents for the industry,[16] and at that moment it aimed to be recognised as the most highly acclaimed art school in Asia within five years of inception.[17] The late Veronica Ho was a Dean's List Scholar from New York's Parsons School of Design. She served as Joint Managing Director and Dean of Studies at The One Academy from 1991 until 2009.

The One Academy Beijing

The speedy expansion of the creative industry has drastically increased the worldwide demand for design experts. To cater to this growth, The One Academy decided to capture into the pool of talents in China by establishing a campus in Beijing, China in 2011, in collaboration with the Beijing Film Academy.[18] It has widened further studies options for Chinese students by providing syllabuses offered by affiliated universities in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and New Zealand,[19] with its campus in Yiyuan Cultural Industry Park Zone C, Haidian District, Beijing officially opened to public on 4 August 2012.

Esmod Kuala Lumpur

In 2012, The One Academy collaborated with Esmod Paris, the oldest fashion schoolin the world with 170 years of history to establish a fashion design institute in Kuala Lumpur, [20] with the aim to cater to the growing demand for an international design school in the region.[21] It became the 24th Esmod school in 15 countries around the world, offering the same world class fashion design syllabus as all other Esmod schools. Upon completion of the 3-year course which combines the creativity in fashion design and the practical skills in pattern making, students will be awarded a Diploma in Fashion Design and Pattern Making.[22]

The One Academy’s Diploma Programmes are full-time 3-year courses that prepare students to be proficient theoretically as well as practically.

University of Hertfordshire - The One Academy Design Degree Programme

In 2008, The One Academy partnered with the University of Hertfordshire of United Kingdom to provide an array of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree programmes, where students can complete the course and gain the degrees either in its Bandar Sunway campus or the United Kingdom:[23]

The University of Hertfordshire has accumulated over 150 years of design education experience and possesses a strong international reputation for its student-driven teaching philosophy. Both The One Academy and University of Hertfordshire subscribe to the principle on practical-teaching approach, as a mean to produce the best minds for the creative arena.[24]

School-leavers who wish to enrol in the degree programmes will first go through a one-year Foundation in Communication Design course. However, holders of The One Academy's diplomas in related disciplines are exempted from the Foundation year, as well as the first year of the Degree programme. The first intake was in May 2008.
