The Sympathizer is the debut novel by Vietnamese American professor Viet Thanh Nguyen.[1] It is a best-selling novel,[2] has been widely reviewed,[3][4][5][6][7] and was named a New York Times Editor's Choice.[8] It has been reviewed twice in The New York Times.[9][10] It was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.[11]

Overview

Set as the flashback in a coerced confession of a political prisoner, the book tells the story of the fall of the South Vietnamese government in 1975, and subsequent events in American exile in Los Angeles, through the eyes of a half-Vietnamese undercover communist agent.[12] A Vietnamese reviewer noted that finally Americans have a chance to gain a new perspective on the war, one that is in contrast to the one provided by Hollywood myth makers.[13]
