The War on Witches is an original novel based on the American television series Charmed, the first in a series of novels published by HarperCollins from May 2015.[1] It is written by Paul Ruditis, editor of the Charmed comic book series and author of novels in the earlier Simon & Schuster series of fiction.[1] The novel is set between the events of Season 9 and 10 of the comics.[2][3] The narrative features the four Charmed Ones (Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell and Paige Matthews), the most powerful good witches of all time, and their formerly-demonic ally, Cole Turner.

Plot summary

Set after the events of both the final episode of the television series, "Forever Charmed", and the final print issue of Charmed: Season 9, "The Power of 300",[2] the narrative details the reunion of the younger Charmed Ones – Piper, Phoebe, and Paige – with their oldest sister, Prue, who was killed at the end of the third season. Creating an alliance with the newly-resurrected half-demon Cole Turner, Phoebe's former husband, the four Charmed Ones use their combined "Power of Three" to protect witches from a witch hunt in modern day San Francisco.

Continuity

The novel is the first in a series published by HarperCollins set in the fictional "Charmed universe"; it is officially licensed by CBS Consumer Products who owns the rights to Charmed and its spin-off material.[1] A previous series of novels based on the television series was published by Simon & Schuster between 1999 and 2008.

The continuity of the novel fits between the two comic book series, Charmed: Season 9 (2010–12) and Charmed: Season 10 (2014–), both published by Zenescope Entertainment.[2][3] Its author, Paul Ruditis, previously wrote three novels in the Simon & Schuster series – The Brewing Storm (2004), As Puck Would Have It (2006), and Leo Rising (2007) – as well as three official guidebooks, and every issue of Season 9. He is currently the editor of Season 10.[4]

Speaking on earlier Charmed literature, Ruditis has stated that all officially-licensed material concerning the series must receive studio clearance from CBS prior to publication in order to adhere to the established fictional canon.[5] Consequently, '[t]he studio still has to approve the direction' authors of Charmed literature take.[5] According to Pat Shand, author of Season 10, the comics and novels based on the franchise are part of the Charmed canon and follow the established continuity of the series.[3][6]
