Rear Admiral Timothy Michael "Tim" Giardina (born 1957 or 1958) is a retired United States Navy officer and formerly the deputy commander of U.S. nuclear forces.[1][2] In May 2014, he was fined and reprimanded for lying to an investigator, and reverted to the rank of rear admiral, following an investigation into the use of counterfeit gambling chips.[3]
He was deputy commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet at the time of the 2009 USS Port Royal grounding.[4]
He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.[5]
Scandal
In June 2013, Giardina was caught using three counterfeit poker chips in a Council Bluffs casino.[6] Following a series of further unsuccessful attempts to defraud casinos in July 2013, Giardina was caught by the Navy and suspended from duty in September 2013. He was later reduced in rank and fired from his position as Deputy Commander Strategic Command. Later investigation revealed that Giardina would alter 1$ chips into 500$ chips with adhesive tape and would spend approximately 15 hours a week gambling. In May 2014 he was found guilty of two counts of conduct unbecoming of an officer and separated from the Navy.[7]
