WNUB-FM (88.3 FM) is a radio station licensed to serve Northfield, Vermont. The station is owned by The Trustees of the Norwich University. It airs a College radio format.[1]
The station has been assigned call letters WNUB by the Federal Communications Commission since it first came on the air in 1967. The current FCC database shows January 27, 1982, when database changes updated assignments to include the '-FM'.[2]
This station has been serving Norwich University and the Dog River Valley area since the fall of 1967. WNUB-FM was initially assigned to 89.1 MHz and limited to a power of 10-watts. It operated out of what is now an office on the top floor of Jackman Hall, the University's administration building, with the antenna atop the building, the tallest structure on campus. The station was organized during the winter and spring of 1967 by student activists. It [the physical plant] was constructed by a small team of student volunteers and university staff led by a young Electrical Engineering student David Bonney '70 over the summer and early fall of 1967. Their faculty advisor, George Turner, then the school's Public Information Officer, was a driving force behind securing the license and equipping the facility.
Until the station became a part of the school's Communication's Department in the 1980s it was student run, operating irregular hours and only during the academic year. Like many college radio stations of that era WNUB was at the center of some campus and community controversy.
