In early 2016, he became widely known for playing the character Bai Luo Yin in Addicted, a web series that was banned by SAPPRFT. He was the first artist to achieve top spots in both China V chart and Mandarin chart in Billboard China.[1][2] He also became the first solo artist from Mainland China to have a sold out concert in South Korea.[3][4]
Early and Personal life
Since childhood, Xu Weizhou has pursued various artistic endeavors including dancing, singing, music composition, and playing the guitar. He learned Latin dance for over 10 years and won the gold award of Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). In high school, he formed a death metal rock band, "PROME" with some of his schoolmates and played lead guitarist. He and his band "PROME" won the Midi high school band competition in Shanghai also. Moreover, he looked for the bands sponsorships including management for the winter vacation music festival in Shanghai and also was on the local newspaper. He graduated from the Affiliated Senior High School of the Shanghai Theatre Academy. Currently, he is attending the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing.[5][6]
Career
2015-2016: Career beginnings, Addicted, Rising Popularity and Singing career debut
While still in college, Xu Weizhou debuted on a short film called Crazy Gaming (Gaming Madness) as one of the leads in early 2015. He also participated on various photoshoots as a part-time that led him to be discovered and scouted as one of the leads of a homosexual-themed web series Addicted. The filming of Addicted casts started filming on late 2015 and ended on early 2016. He composed and sang the OST of Addicted and had a duet with his co-star Huang Jingyu on the opening song of the series. In early 2016, “Addicted” became popular but at the start of its fourth week of airing, all episodes of the drama were taken off air from major Chinese video streaming websites by China's SAPPRFT and were no longer accessible.[7] A few days later, all remaining episodes of the first season were uploaded via Huace Film and TV official channel on YouTube. This also made the lead actors popular locally and internationally. On April 2, 2016, the Chinese media leaked the SAPPRFT directives on sensitive content that includes the following: " The web drama “Addicted” dealing with homosexual subject matter, has been forbidden from broadcast. All channels are to cease inviting all lead actors onto their shows or to hype them, such as Huang Jingyu, Xu Weizhou, Lin Fengsong, and Chen Wen ".[8] By the time this document was leaked, Xu Weizhou and his co-star Huang Jingyu have already filmed episodes for two popular variety show, Happy Camp and Run for Time. The Happy Camp episode, which was scheduled to broadcast on April 16, never did broadcast and both actors were severely cut out from the episode of Run for Time. Afterwards, he has been focusing on his music career and on May 1, Xu released his first album entitled Light and started his Asian concert tours around June-August. He was the first artist to achieve top spots in both China V chart and Mandarin chart in Billboard China.[9][10] He's also the first solo artist from Mainland China to have a sold out concert in South Korea.[11][12] Apart from music, he also participated on various fashion magazine photo-shoots; not only magazines published in China, but other countries such as South Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong. Later, he raised his profile and earned numerous awards as Best New Artist of the Year.
