Nantes France Diplomatic Archivess have stored official documents dated February 13, 1938 which Japan embassy staff in Beijing,Morishima Morito, addressed to Francis Lacoste of the French Embassy in Beijing. The documents reports an investigation results which the Japanese government made, and explains detailed and concrete measures which the Japanese army took for protecting the Missionary. In addition, the crime is affirmed to be due to Chinese military straggler. Not to Japanese soldiers. And it says "We have not found evidence to overturn the results even after the investigation was continued. Therefore, the Japanese government can not bear the responsibility for the incident."[1]

A dutch priest entered the local three days after the incident. Circumstances that he heard from employees has been recorded.”A dozen robbers were all wearing a Japanese military uniform. Rather than a regiment hat, they were wearing a felt hat. (snip) They talked that they were Manchus of "Red Beard", in other words bandits, and wanted the money to go back to the country. ”[2]

There exist Japanese historical records that correspond to the Nantes ones. One is addressed from the French embassy to Morishima Counsellor, and asks an investigation( dated 10.24.1937).

Another is addressed from Morishima to the French embassy, and answers in the official documents dated February 13, 1938. This is talking about the above Nantes documents.

The other says that the French Embassy submitted a memorandum that they did not pose any problem in the future with respect to this matter( dated 4.16.1938).
