Zia Ur Rehman (Pashto, Urdu: ضیاءالرحمن, born 13 March 1981) is a Pakistani journalist, columnist and author. [1] He researches and cover security issues in the country.[2] Rehman has also authored a book, “Karachi In Turmoil”,[3] which received a lot of attention locally and internationally.[4]

Personal life

Rehman belongs to Swat valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, but his parents migrated to Karachi in 1960s. Rehman was born and raised in Karachi, the capital of Sindh province.[5]

Work

Rehman is currently working with The News International and the New York Times and has been published in The Friday Times, Dawn and Central Asia Online since 2010.[6] He mainly covers security, political issues and profiles of Islamist and ethnic militant groups operating in the region.[7]

Publications

Rehman authored a book on violence in Karachi titled Karachi in Turmoil, published in February 2013.[8] The book mainly covered the ethno-political, sectarian and criminal violence in the city.[9] Besides this, his published work includes research reports for several national and international centers. He has also written research reports for international think tanks, including the Jamestown Foundation and the Norwegian Peacebuilding Resource Center (NOREF) and Central Asia Online.[10]

Awards

Rehman won four Agahi Journalism Awards in 2013 for his reports on minorities and security issues.[11]
