Month-By-Month Review
May
23 May- Shortly after their 4-1 aggregate victory over Falkirk in the Premiership play-off final, Kilmarnock confirmed that they would not be renewing the contracts of Lee Ashcroft, Conor Brennan, Julien Faubert, Alex Henshall, Chris Johnston and Aaron Splaine.[1] Club captain Mark Connolly had the last year of his contract cancelled while seven other players; Conrad Balatoni, Kallum Higginbotham, Dale Carrick, Kevin McHattie, Mark O'Hara, Tope Obadeyi and David Syme; were told they were free to leave the club.[1]
24 May- Despite offering Craig Slater a new contract,[1] the midfielder confirmed he had rejected the deal and announced his intention to leave the club.[2]
27 May- Kilmarnock were drawn in Group H along with Greenock Morton, Berwick Rangers, Albion Rovers and Clyde in the Betfred Cup.[3]
June
2 June- The fixtures for the 2016–17 Betfred Cup were announced. Kilmarnock will begin the 2016–17 season with a trip to Clyde on 16 July and will end the group stage with a home match against Albion Rovers on 30 July.[4]
8 June- After being told he could leave the club,[1] defender Mark O'Hara signed for Premiership rivals Dundee.[5]
16 June- After being told he could leave the club,[1] defender David Syme signed for Premiership rivals Partick Thistle.[6]
17 June- The fixtures for the 2016–17 Scottish Premiership were announced. Kilmarnock will begin the 2016–17 season with a home match against Motherwell on 6 August.[7]
18 June- Another player told he could leave the club,[1] defender Kevin McHattie joined former manager Gary Locke at Raith Rovers.[8]
22 June- Rory McKenzie signs a new deal keeping him at the club until summer 2018.[9] Paul Stephenson, who worked with manager Lee Clark at Huddersfield Town and Blackpool, was appointed Head of Youth Development,[10] replacing Alan Robertson who retired at the end of last season.[11]
24 June- The club announced the signing of six new players: defender Jamie Cobain from Newcastle United, striker Souleymane Coulibaly from Peterborough United, winger Jordan Jones from Middlesbrough, winger Callum McFadzean from Sheffield United, midfielder Martin Smith from Sunderland and defender Joshua Webb from Aston Villa.[12] The club also announced the signing of striker Flo Bojaj and defender Will Boyle on loan from manager Lee Clark's former club Huddersfield Town.[12] Jonathan Burn and Mark Waddington also joined the club on loan from Middlesbrough and Stoke City respectively whilst goalkeeper Oliver Davies returns on loan from Swansea City.[13] The club also announced that defender Miles Addison was set to sign a new three-year contract.[14]
July
1 July- After being told he could leave the club,[1] midfielder Tope Obadeyi signed for recently relegated Dundee United.[15]
8 July- Former Kilmarnock inside forward Jackie McInally, 79, died after a sudden illness. Jackie, father of former Kilmarnock and FC Bayern Munich striker Alan, played over 200 times for the club and was a regular during the clubs most successful period during the 1960s. Arguably, McInally's crowing glory in a Kilmarnock shirt was scoring the winner in the greatest comeback in Scottish football during Kilmarnock's 5–4 aggregate victory against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1964–65 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.[16]
15 July- After being told he could leave the club,[1] Dale Carrick became the 15th player to leave the club after he signed for Livingston.[17]
16 July- Kilmarnock began the season with a 2–1 win against Clyde at Broadwood Stadium in the Betfred Cup group stage.[18] Recently appointed captain Steven Smtih led the team out for the first time.[18][19]
18 July- Another of the players told he could leave the club,[1] Kallum Higginbotham signed for Dunfermline Athletic[20]
26 July- After falling 2–0 behind at Shielfield Park, Kilmarnock came back to beat Berwick Rangers 3–2. This was the first time in 12 years that Kilmarnock were able to comeback to win from two goals down.[21][22]
30 July- Kilmarnock finished second in Group H in the Betfred Cup following a 0–0 draw with Albion Rovers.[23] Despite finishing second, Kilmarnock were knocked-out of the competition as 7pts were not enough to secure one of the four best runners-up spots.[24]
August
6 August- Kilmarnock began the 2016–17 Scottish Premiership season with a 2–1 defeat against Motherwell at Rugby Park.[25]
11 August-Charlton Athletic sign last season's top scorer Josh Magennis in a deal worth around £250,000.[26][27]
12 August- Kilmarnock made their 12th summer signing after George Green joined on a six-month loan from Burnley.[28]
13 August- Kilmarnock striker Kris Boyd hit two milestones for the club as he scored his 100th goal on his 250th appearance for the club in the 2–1 win against Hamilton Academical at New Douglas Park. Boyd becomes the 11th player to reach 100 goals for Kilmarnock.[29][30]
18 August- Kilmarnock announced the signing of Luke Hendrie on loan from Burnley.[31]
19 August- One day later, Charlee Adams became the clubs eighth loan signing of the season, joining from Birmingham City, while Nigerian defender Dapo Kayode signed a one-year deal. The signings were made possible after the sale of Josh Magennis.[32]
30 August- Defender Conrad Balatoni became the 17th player to leave the club in this transfer window as the club agreed to terminate his contract.[33]
31 August- The club announced their ninth loan signing of the season as defender Scott Boyd joined from Ross County[34]
September
1 September- After making a combined total of just four appearances for the club, Mark Waddington and Oliver Davies' loans were terminated and they returned to their parent clubs.[35]
8 September- Striker Kris Boyd revealed that, on Wednesday, September 7, his younger brother Scott, 27, had been found dead at his home in Auchinleck, East Ayrshire. Boyd, 33, hoped that talking about his brother taking his own life would help raise awareness and help others in a similar situation.[36][37]
12 September- Kilmarnock made their 17th signing of the season as striker Nathan Tyson signed a one-year deal.[38]
17 September- After scoring the opening goal in Kilmarnock's 2–2 draw with Partick Thistle, striker Kris Boyd pointed to the heavens in tribute to his younger brother Scott, whose funeral was held on Thursday, September 15. Manager Lee Clark praised the Boyd's bravery after the match.[39][40]
22 September- Billy Bowie, Russell Smith and John Kiltie, Directors of Kilmarnock F.C., offered controversial businessman Michael Johnston £1.9 million for his 40% stake in the club, with an un-named Ayrshire businessman ready to invest £750,000 in the club upon Johnston's departure.[41]
23 September- Chris McMail, the previously un-named businessman, warned that there was a risk of Kilmarnock going into administration because Micheal Johnston wasn't willing to sell his 40% shareholding in the club. McMail, managing director of the Microtech Group, expressed confusion and frustration at Johnston's position as reason's for wanting Johnston out of the picture before making any investment. McMail cited director Billy Bowie's position as not being able to "go on writing blank cheques" as a reason for a potential administration. However, despite supporter unrest at the situation and accusations of alienating local businesses, Johnston wants to remain until 2019, citing the terms of a debt restructuring deal with the bank.[42][43]
24 September- Manager Lee Clark dismissed claims by Chris McMail that the club could go into administration as "scaremongering" because of his good relationship with the clubs board of directors.[44][45]
October
4 October- Midfielder Greg Kiltie was ruled out for the rest of the season after struggling with a hamstring injury. Kiltie was due to travel to London in the next few days for an operation on Saturday, October 8.[46]
18 October- The Kilmarnock Football Club Supporters Association launched a petition with the aim of removing chairman Micheal Johnston from the board.[47]
19 October- Director Russell Smith resigned from his role on the club's board, leaving Billy Bowie, Michael Johnston and John Kiltie as the only three remaining board members.[48]
20 October- The petition launched by the Kilmarnock Football Club Supporters Association reached over 700 signatures. The petition calls for club chairman Michael Johnston to resign from his position on the board.[49]
26 October- The Scottish Professional Football League confirmed that Kilmarnock's tie against Aberdeen due to played on Saturday, November 26 had been rearranged to Tuesday, December 3 after Aberdeen reached the final of the Betfred Cup.[50] The managing director of Kilmarnock's main shirt sponsor, QTS, warned that the company could pull its sponsorship unless Michael Johnston resigned from his position on the board. Alan McLeish said that the current boardroom arrangements at the club was "creating a very disturbing atmosphere" that was "detrimental to the team’s success". QTS has given Kilmarnock over £1.2 million in sposorship deals since 2012.[51]
