Bebington High Sports College is a secondary school in Bebington on the Wirral Peninsula, England. The school is located in Bebington within three schools Wirral Grammar School for Boys, Wirral Grammar School for Girls and St John Plessington Catholic College. The school opened in 1915 as Bebington High School and was renamed Bebington High Sports College in 2004.
It is a foundation school administered by Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council and a charitable foundation trust. Partners of the school include Liverpool John Moores University, Barnardo's and Tranmere Rovers F.C.[1] The school was designated a specialist Sports College in 2001.[2]
This school is slightly smaller than average size. It is situated in the south-east area of the Wirral. The percentage of students known to be eligible for free school meals is twice the national average. The proportion of students with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including those with a statement of special educational needs, is above that usually found. The percentage of students from minority ethnic heritages is below average but rising. There are few students who are at early stages of learning English. Bebington High is an accredited Healthy School, holds the Sportsmark award and has intermediate International Schools status. The school hosts a unit funded by the local authority to support students with moderate learning difficulties (MLD). It is also registered as a full-core extended school. The school is one mile away from Bebington railway station.
History
The school was originally opened as Bebington High School in 1915 in order to train future recruits during the height of World War I. The school remained opened since the end of World War I. During The Blitz in World War II, the school was installed with 26 underground cellars to use as bomb shelters. The school suffered slight damage, but it was repaired. The school was then an all-girls school during the 1970s. The school has gone through changes during the start of the 21st century. The uniform, which was a shirt and a purple fleece was changed to a shirt, a different colored tie, depending on the wearer's school year, a tank-top and a black blazer with the school logo stitched on it.
Academics
Bebington High Sports College offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils while students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A-levels and further BTECs.[3]
Sport facilities
The school has a 21-metre sports hall in the sports corridor and a gymnasium. The school's back yard has a 47-metre court called the "Muga" which stands for "Multi-Use Games Area and a 92-metre football pitch called Bebington's All-Weathers Football Pitch or the "Astro Turf" by the students as the pitch is made out of astro turf. The football pitch cost £500,000 to construct and was completed in 2012. The pitch is frequently used by Tranmere Rovers F.C for training. The school also has two large fields used for tennis or rugby.
School farm
In 2013, the school has opened a school farm, which was the UK's 100th school farm opened. The farm was opened by actor, Sean Wilson, who played Martin Platt in the soap opera, Coronation Street. The farm has three kunekune pigs and three Tamworth pigs, a few sheep, four quails, fifteen chickens and four pygmy goats. In 2014, the farm was vandalized by presumably, students from the school. One of the pigs were killed by the vandal and spray-painted and the vandal set fire to a polytunnel. The farm is used as a BTEC option for students.
Sixth Form College
Following the dissolution of Rock Ferry High School in 2011, the sixth form college in the school merged with various schools, including Bebington High, which already had a sixth form, and thus extending it. The college has high standards in the area, with BTEC lessons being hailed as one of the most successful lessons in the college. A* lessons have been graded, and the college is one of the most successful sixth form colleges in Merseyside. The college accepts students 17–18 years of age, and accepts staff for the college and school. The head of sixth form college is Media teacher, Mr Johns
