Bozoma "Boz" Saint John is a marketing executive at Apple Music. She joined the company in its acquisition of Beats Music. Born in Ghana, Saint John emigrated to the United States as a teenager. She graduated from Wesleyan University to work at advertising and marketing firms. Saint John led PepsiCo's foray into music festival-based marketing, and remained with the company for almost a decade before joining Beats Music and Apple. Journalists described her presentation of the redesigned Apple Music onstage at the June 2016 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference as Saint John's breakthrough moment.
Early life and career
Saint John was born in Ghana[1] and moved to Colorado Springs when she was 14. Her father was a clarinet player and member of the Ghanaian army before emigrating to the United States to graduate college. Saint John cites her father as her biggest inspiration.[2] She graduated Wesleyan University with an English major.[1] Saint John then worked at the advertising agency Spike DDB, the fashion brand Ashley Stewart, and PepsiCo, where she remained for about a decade and led its music and entertainment marketing. The division itself came from her suggestion that the company sponsor music festivals and award shows. When Jimmy Iovine of Beats Music personally recruited Saint John from PepsiCo based on her experience in music marketing, Saint John moved from New York to Los Angeles to lead marketing for the company. She worked for Beats Music for three months before the company was acquired by Apple, where she became the head of global consumer marketing for iTunes and Apple Music. As of 2016, she commutes between Los Angeles and Apple's Cupertino headquarters several times a week.[2] Magazines recognized Saint John's work in superlative lists including Billboard Magazine's list of the top women in music, Fast Company's 100 most creative people, and AdWeek's most exciting personalities in advertising.[1]
Journalists described Saint John's appearance onstage during the 2016 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference as her breakthrough moment, with a captivating "passion" and persona that captivated both local and online audiences.[2][3] Biz Carson of Business Insider said that her appearance helped to emphasize Apple's complete rebuild of its Apple Music software. For instance, she attempted to have the audience sing along with on-screen lyrics, a feature in the redesigned app.[2] Buzzfeed wrote that she was the "coolest" person to ever take the stage at an Apple keynote.[4]
