Carmen Sallés y Barangueras or María del Carmen Sallés y Barangueras (born 9 April 1848, Barcelona – d. 25 July 1911, Madrid) was a Spanish nun who is noted for founding the Order of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and her advocacy of the equality of men and women. She was canonized on 21 October 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.[1]

Biography

Carmen Sallés y Barangueras was raised in Barcelona, Spain in a devout Catholic family. She was the second oldest of 10 children. In 1858, Carmen traveled to Montserrat on a pilgrimage together with her family. It was during this trip that she decided to devote her life to God after her First Communion.[2]

A few years later, Carmen fulfilled that goal and began her path in the service of the Catholic Church by joining the Adores Sisters, breaking a marriage betrothal in the process. Her work during this 22-year period of her life focused on helping the recovery and rehabilitation of women who had fallen victims to lives of prostitution or other crimes.[2]

Carmen later founded the Order of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Mary which focused on influencing society in a positive way and educating girls in order to prevent them from turning to the evils of prostitution and other forms of moral degradation in society.[3]

Death and Legacy

Carmen Sallés y Barangueras died on 25 July 1911 in Madrid, Spain at the age of 63.

On 15 March 1998, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II[4] and was canonized as a saint on 21 October 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.[1]

Although she is listed in the Roman Martyrology for 25 July, the date of her death, the feast day of Saint Carmen Sallés is celebrated liturgically on 6 Dec.
