The name means "lighthouse garden" in Turkish (from fener, meaning "lighthouse", and bahçe, meaning "garden"), deriving from an ancient lighthouse located at Fenerbahçe cape (40°58′08″N 29°01′59″E / 40.968801°N 29.032936°E).
