GMAC Real Estate was a real estate franchise company in the United States, with 1300 locations in North America, and more than 22,000 real estate agents. The company is a division of GMAC Home Services, which was acquired by Brookfield Properties in 2008. It was merged into sister brand Real Living in 2009.
GMAC Real Estate was founded in 1998, when the General Motors Acceptance Corporation bought the "Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate" brand from Meredith Corporation (which had and continues to publish the magazine). Sub-brands operated by GMAC Real Estate include "Elegant Homes", "GMAC Real Estate Second Homes", and "Home Rewards". The company differentiated itself from its competition by focusing its internal efforts and external marketing on "service", through its branded "Premier Service" program.
GMAC Real Estate's Company Owned Business Unit was the fourth largest real estate brokerage in the United States, and included 94 offices and 3,800 real estate professionals nationwide. Company owned offices were located in major metropolitan markets including the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, metro New York, Boston and elsewhere throughout New England.
GMAC Real Estate US was acquired by Brookfield Real Estate Services Manager Limited, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management in 2008. Allowing Brookfield to enter the US real estate industry.[1]
