Background and History

Gorey Community School was established in 1993, founded by Bishop Levo following the amalgamation of the Loreto, Vocational and CBS schools.

It now has a student population of over 1600 and a teaching staff of more than 150.

The school occupies a large site of almost 20 acres (81,000 m2) which comprises playing fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts. In 2000 a new extension was opened. The construction of a second extension began in September 2007 and was completed in October 2008. There are now over 90 classrooms including numerous specialist rooms and a large gymnasium. Another further extension was made in 2011 and opened in 2012. Through many years of fund raising an oratory was built in 2003 with seating for over 200 people.

GCS is managed by a Board of Management, which includes 6 representatives from the trustees ( the V.E.C., the Loreto order and the C.B.S), 2 teachers representatives and 2 parents representatives).

Exchanges

Gorey Community School does a number of student exchanges with different schools in different countries. These countries are Spain, Italy, France and most recently Germany. The students are given pen-pals from their given country where they get in touch with each other and then the student will come over and stay with the community school student. The student from the exchange will shadow the community school student in school also where they will pick up on the language. The community school student then goes over and follows the same process. [1]

Music and Drama

The school is heavily involved in music and drama. Every year the school puts on a concert called the Bene Merenti where the students will perform and show off their talents. Bi-annually the school puts on a musical. The Bene Merenti and school musical take place in Gorey Little Theatre.[2]

Adult Education

Gorey Community School provides night classes from 7pm until 10pm. They provide a wide variey of level 5 and level 6 courses varying from childcare to woodturning. Classes are on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday evenings.[3]
