The Hanoi Metro (Vietnamese: Dự án Đường sắt đô thị Hà Nội) is a metro rail system being constructed in the capital of Vietnam. Hanoi's first metro line was originally scheduled to be completed in 2016 but pushed back to 2018 and expected to provide transportation to 200,000 passengers a day.[1]

Overview

Currently, commuters in Hanoi use motorbikes, bicycles, cars, buses, and taxis to get around. The metro project is part of the Vietnam Ministry of Transport's master plan, which aims to reduce the use of private motor transport and enhance the urban environment. The entire project is being carried out by Hanoi Metropolitan Rail Transport Project Board (HRB), formerly known as the Hanoi Authority for Tram and Public Transport Development Management (HATD).

Plan

In July 2008, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng approved an overall transport development plan for Hanoi, which, among other projects, proposed a metro system with eight lines.[2][3] The project is being carried out by the Hanoi Metropolitan Rail Transport Project Board (HRB, network map).[4]

The priority lines are:[5]

The long term plan is to have the following eight lines:

Line 2 Noi Bai Airport/ Soc Son - Center of the City - Thuong Dinh 35.2 km
