Karbala Sports City is a sports complex in Karbala, Southern Iraq.
Overview
Its construction was started on January 2013 and it's currently under construction. The city is being funded by the government of Iraq with a budget spending of $100 million, contributed to contain main stadium with capacity of 30,000 people, and other sports related facilities.[1]
The contract of this project was given to Abdullah Al-Jaburi, a major Iraqi construction contractor.
Opening
The stadium was opened on the 12th of May 2016. The opening game was between the Karbala National Team and the 2007 Asian Cup winners Iraq National Team. The game ended in 0-0 and it was visited by more than the capacity actually holds.
The stadium will host games of Karbalaa FC in the 2016–17 Iraqi Premier League
