The thirty-one episodes of the sixth season of the anime series Naruto: Shippuden are directed by Hayato Date and produced by Studio Pierrot and TV Tokyo. They are based on Part II of the Naruto manga series by Masashi Kishimoto. The sixth season began airing on June 11, 2009 on TV Tokyo in Japan, and finished on January 14, 2010.[1][2] The English dubbed version of this season began on January 12, 2013 and ended in the same year, February 4 on Neon Alley.[3] They are centered on Sasuke Uchiha's quest of revenge against his older brother Itachi for their clan's destruction. It also features two arcs focusing on the background stories of Kakashi Hatake and Jiraiya. The season is referred to by its DVDs as the chapter of Master's Prophecy and Vengeance (師の予言と復讐 Shi no Yogen to Fukushū) released by Aniplex.[4]
The seven DVD volumes were released in Japan between January 13, 2010 and July 7, 2011. Limited edition of Seventh DVD of "Master's Prophecy and Vengeance" comes with special DVD Behind the Scenes of Uchiha containing interview mixed with footage from episodes.[5] Episodes 119-120, which detail the story of a young Kakashi and his teammate Obito Uchiha, were released on separate disc on December 16, 2009 under the title of Kakashi Chronicles: Boys' Life on the Battlefield (カカシ外伝~戦場のボーイズライフ~ Kakashi Gaiden ~Senjō no Bōizu Raifu~).[6]
On January 2, 2009 Viz Media and Crunchyroll began providing subtitled Naruto: Shippuden episodes.[7] The season was also streamed on Neon Alley from January 12, 2013 to February 4, 2013.
This season uses five musical themes: two opening themes and three ending themes. "Hotaru no Hikari" (ホタルノヒカリ, "Glow of Fireflies") by Ikimono-gakari is used as the opening theme from episode 113 to episode 128, continuing its usage from the previous season. It was replaced in episode 129 with "Sign" by Flow. The first ending theme is "Shinkokyū" (深呼吸, "Deep Breath") by Super Beaver used for only the first three episodes of the season. "My Answer" by Seamo was used as the ending theme for episodes 116-128. It was replaced in episode 129 by "Omae Dattanda" (おまえだったんだ, "It Was You") by Kishidan and ran until episode 141. It was replaced by "For You" by Azu in episode 142. The third feature movie, Naruto Shippūden The Movie: Inheritors of the Will of Fire, which is based on the Naruto: Shippuden series, was released on August 1, 2009. The broadcast versions of episodes 119 to 124 include scenes from the movie in the opening themes, while still retaining the music "Hotaru no Hikari" by Ikimono-gakari.

Almost three years after using the Transference Ritual to take the body of Genyumaru to prolong his life, Orochimaru's current host body has reached its limit. Orochimaru and Kabuto discuss Sasuke's progress since the youth's first encounter with the former during the Chunin Exams before the latter walks off to get supplies to treat Orochimaru prior to the commencement of the Transference Ritual. Minutes later, Orochimaru finds himself being surprise attacked by Sasuke, who has nothing left to learn from the Sannin and belittles Orochimaru's ideals and agenda before attempting to kill him. But Orochimaru discards Genyumaru's body while revealing his true form, a giant white snake, before attempting to restrain Sasuke. But Sasuke uses his Cursed Seal to destroy the serpentine extensions Meanwhile, Tsunade discovers the Three-Tails is taken by the Akatsuki. | |||

As Orochimaru battles Sasuke, he reminisces about the key moments in his past that defined the man he became since becoming interested in immortality. Some of these moments included Orochimaru's obsession with the Sharingan since seeing Itachi and a near-death experience during a failed attempt to take the man's body. In the present, once his oxygen-exposed blood paralyzed Sasuke, Orochimaru begins the Transference ritual. But Sasuke used his Sharingan and force of will to circumvent the ritual, absorbing a powerless Orochimaru while retaining control of his body. When Kabuto finds Sasuke standing over Orochimaru's snake corpse, having explaining his mentor to have succeeded, he is shocked by the vision of what occurred before watching Sasuke leave the hideout. | |||

Before leaving Orochimaru's hideout, Sasuke frees Suigetsu Hozuki from his hydro capsule to request his services. Though Suigetsu initially turns him down, he later offers his services to Sasuke in return for the whereabouts of Zabuza's sword. But when Sasuke takes Suigetsu to where Zabuza was buried, the Executioner's Blade is no where to be seen. The two later learn that the blade came into the possession of a man named Tenzen Daikoku. Sasuke uses Tenzen's guarded fortress to test Suigetsu's combat abilities, and Suigetsu gets the blade without much effort and taking lives. As promised, realizing that Sasuke knew where the Executioner's Blade was the entire time, Suigetsu joins up with Sasuke and goes with him to the Southern hideout. | |||

Sasuke and Suigetsu arrive to the South Hideout where the former intends to recruit the establishment's warden Karin who has effectively prevented any rumor of Orochimaru's demise from being passed on in the prison. Despite her hesitations and quarrels with Suigetsu, given additional reasoning as her prisoners were being freed, Karin ultimately accepts after remembering her very first encounter with Sasuke. With that, Sasuke takes his allies to the next location to retrieve their final member. | |||

In the Hidden Leaf Village, Naruto and Sakura find out from Tsunade and Jiraiya that Sasuke has killed Orochimaru. But as the two are dismayed to learn that he is not returning to the village, Sasuke and his group arrive to the North Hideout where the monstrous rejects of Orochimaru's experiments are imprisoned along with the final member of their crew: Jugo. Karin voices against recruiting Jugo due to his abnormal homicidal impulses when in a bad mood while revealing his enzymes were used as the basis for Orochimaru’s Curse Marks. Upon arriving, Sasuke and his team find themselves in the middle of a massive jail break and manage to suppress the rampaging Curse Marked prisoners. Only Jugo remained in his cell, deliberating over killing the first person who opens his door by their sex. Picking a man as Sasuke opens his cell door, Jugo immediately attacks the youth. But Sasuke partially transforms to protect himself while explaining to Jugo that he only wishes to talk. | |||

Though Sasuke attempts to reason with him, Jugo refuses to leave the North Hideout and proceeds to chase after Sasuke who allows the youth to chase after him. Eventually, after being updated by Karin, Suigetsu reaches Jugo and attempts to fight him before Sasuke stops the two while making death threats. This causes Jugo to regain his usual mindset and run back into his cell, pleading to be left alone out of fear that he might kill someone. Karin explains to Suigetsu that Jugo willingly joined Orochimaru to find a means to control his bloodlust and the only person who could calm him was the late Kimimaro, who Jugo saw a dear friend. Sasuke manages to reach Jugo by revealing himself to be the one who Kimimaro died for, convincing the youth to join his team to honor Kimimaro and see if he is anything like his friend. With his ideal team assembled, calling their group the "Hebi", Sasuke explains that they will help him hunt down his brother Itachi. Back in the Leaf Village, once learning of Sasuke's plan to kill Itachi from Jiraiya and Tsunade, Naruto decides to find the Akatsuki member before Sasuke. | |||

During the Third Great Ninja War seventeen years ago, a 13-year-old Kakashi Hatake is just promoted to Jonin with his mentor, the future Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze, and Rin Nohara giving him gifts. Only Kakashi's other teammate and rival, Obito Uchiha, forgot to bring a present. Soon after, Minato tells his students of their mission to destroy Kannabi Bridge so they can cripple the ninja from the Hidden Stone Village. Along the way, Team Minato is ambushed by Hidden Stone ninja named Mahiru with Kakashi seeing it as an opportunity to try his newly developed jutsu: the Chidori. However, with Kakashi's attack unable to land a hit on his target and Obito is too frightened to fight, Minato personally eliminates Mahiru. Minato then tells Kakashi not to use the Chidori due to its vertigo effect while criticizing Obito for not being able to act on his words. That night, unable to sleep, Obito learns from Minato that Kakashi's mindset is the result of his father Sakumo Hatake being ostracized for putting his teammates ahead of the mission. The next day, left in charge as Minato heads off, Kakashi leads Rin and Obito into enemy territory before they are attacked by the Hidden Stone ninja Kakko and Taiseki who abduct Rin. Having accepted Kakashi as leader prior, Obito punches him for putting the mission before Rin as he runs off to save her. | |||

After leaving an impression on Kakashi, Obito finds the cave where Rin is being held in before being attacked by Taiseki. When Kakashi arrives in time to save him from being killed, losing his left eye in the process, Obito musters the courage and takes out Taiseki with his awakened Sharingan. Kakashi and Obito then proceed to rescue Rin, but Kakko causes the cave to collapse in on them. With rocks falling all around the Konoha ninja, Obito threw Kakashi out of the way of a falling rock, which landed on him instead, and crushed the entire right side of his body. Knowing his death is certain, remembering that he still owe his team mate a gift, Obito has Rin transplant his left eye into Kakashi's eye socket. Seeing Kakashi cry over how things turned out, Obito assures him that he's a great ninja and asks him to protect Rin. Once Obito's Sharingan is transplanted into him, Kakashi emerges from the rubble and uses a perfected Chidori to kill Kakko. However, more Hidden Stone ninja arrive and cause the cave to collapse further with Obito apparently crushed as Kakashi and Rin are forced to leave him behind. After being saved by Minato, the surviving members of Team Minato lament over losing Obito before they complete their mission in destroying the Kannabi Bridge. | |||

After capturing the Four-Tails Jinchuriki Roshi, Itachi and Kisame are informed by the Akatsuki leader of Orochimaru's death and that Sasuke may go after Itachi. Later, after the Three-Tails and the Four-Tails are sealed, Deidara and Tobi set out targeting either Naruto or Sasuke. Meanwhile, as the Hebi gather supplies at an abandoned Uchiha warehouse, Kakashi enlists Team Kurenai to work with Team Kakashi to track down Itachi and capture him. | |||

As Naruto and the others set off with Kakashi's ninja hounds, Sasuke sends the other members of Hebi to look for information on Itachi. Sakura walks past Karin as Hinata, Yamato and Naruto run into Kabuto, who gives them a book with information on the Akatsuki. Kabuto also reveals that he long been on a quest to find himself and though Orochimaru would give him the answers he sought. But with Orochimaru dead, and inspired by Naruto's similar plight, Kabuto took some of his mentor's remains and transplanted them into his own body to becoming his ideal self. He then leaves to adapt to his transformation while promising to track down Sasuke. Elsewhere, Sasuke is confronted by Deidara who intends to kill the youth. | |||

Sasuke asks where Itachi is and slices through Tobi, as Deidara retreats to a distance. Tobi gets back up unharmed as Deidara retaliates with his chakra-level 1 (C1) explosives while yelling at Tobi to keep his distance. Sasuke escapes with a simple replacement jutsu with Deidara forced to use his C2 Dragon, having Tobi bury the dozens of C2 mines across the area to be Sasuke in a difficult position. But Sasuke uses his Curse Mark, and snakes to replace a damaged wing, to thwart Deidara's combo. Telling Tobi to run far away, spurred by the memory of how he was forced to join the Akatsuki, Deidara is left with no choice but to use the trump card he intended to use on Itachi: C4 Karura. | |||

As Deidara's C4 Karura detonates, Sasuke appeared to have perished from the multiple of nano-bombs that Karura spread across the area. Believing to have won, Deidara drops his guard before being pierced by Sasuke's Chidori. After being asked how he had survived, Sasuke reveals that he used Genjutsu to make appeared he was harmed. But Deiara reveals he trained his left eye to see through genjutsu and traps Sasuke in a point-blank Karura while he falls. However, revealing that he learned that Deidara's bombs can be deactivated by Lighting Style attacks, Sasuke disarmed the nanobombs while falling after Deidara. Both combatants had revealed their limits with Sasuke's Sharingan deactivated, Deidara voicing his utter hatred towards him and Itachi. But further angered by Sasuke, Deidara unveils his find attack: turning himself into a C0 explosive to wipe out Sasuke at the cost of his own life. | |||

Upon noticing the blast from the direction where he was to meet Sasuke, Suigetsu summons Manda and finds out that Sasuke used the serpent to escape at the cost of Manda's own life. The two are soon joined by Karin and Jugo as they take Sasuke somewhere safe for him to heal from his injuries. Naruto and the others get to the crater, Kiba using his tracking skills to deduce Sasuke is traveling with others. Meanwhile, after Zetsu informs the remaining Akatsuki of Deidara's death and Tobi presumed dead, the Akatsuki leader Pain and his partner Konan are visited by a mysterious figure who tells them of Sasuke's abilities while giving them instructions to go after Naruto. Revealed to be the true leader of the Akatsuki, the mysterious figure is revealed to be Tobi while he also calls himself Madara Uchiha. | |||

With Karin sensing that their group is being tracked, she asks Jugo to use his birds to help her throw off their pursuers as Hebi leaves town. As the Leaf ninja split up and end up at dead ends, Naruto encounters Itachi with the Akatsuki member subjecting Naruto to a genjutsu before leaving for more pressing matters to attend to. As the events occurred Jiraya arrives in the Hidden Leaf to inform Tsunade of the intel he acquire on the location of the Akatsuki's leader Pain. After briefly talking to Tsunade about the Foundation and Naruto's parents, Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki, Jiraiya departs for the Hidden Rain Village. | |||

Long ago, a young Hiruzen Sarutobi becomes sensei to three gennin. One of the gennin, Jiraiya becomes fascinated by Sarutobi’s summoning jutsu and his attempt ends up with him being transported to Mount Myoboku. There, whenever he is not needed at the Hidden Leaf Village, Jiraiya trains under Fukusaku and meets the Great Lord Elder. The Elder gives Jiraiya a vision of his future that he will choice an apprentice who, for good or worse, change the world. Afterwards, Jiraiya goes on a journey with the goal to fulfill his destiny, meeting many strange characters on the way before he returned to his village as the Second Great Ninja War begins. | |||

During the Second Great Ninja War, Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru are sent to the Hidden Rain Village where they survive their battle against the country's leader Hanzo of the Salamander and were christened by him as the "Legendary Sannin." While he and his comrade contemplate Hanzo's words that their village will soon win the war, Jiraiya meets with a trio of war orphans led by a youth named Yahiko and he decides to remain with the children to teach them ninjutsu. In time, befriending the orphan known as Nagato, Jiraiya eventually returned to his village once he finished training him and his friends. Some time after the Third Great Ninja War, Jiraiya learned his three students were killed. Some time later, having took Minato as a student, Jiraiya finds his student reading the first book he wrote based on his exploits and is honored when he and Kushina request naming their unborn son after the story's hero: "Naruto." | |||

Jiraiya successfully infiltrates the Village Hidden in the Rain, wandering around town and learning that the civil war said to have occurred in the land long ended and the village is under the rule of Pain and his angel. Unsuccessful in gathering information, Jiraiya captures two Rain gennin in to a frog's stomach, learning that Pain is revered as a god and single-handily killed Hanzo. Meanwhile, transferring himself into another body kept in storage, Pain orders fellow Akatsuki member Konan to search for the intruder and she folds herself into origami butterflies. | |||

Jiraiya releases Gerotora from his stomach and instructs the toad to stay behind and take residence in Naruto's body if anything should happen to him. Mentioning Madara Uchiha in his theory, Jiraiya speculates Minato's reasons for sealing half of the Nine-Tails in Naruto's body and that the beast's attack on the Hidden Leaf made have been caused on purpose. After Jiraiya used a shadow-manipulating jutsu to hid and control a rain gennin, he is found by Konan whom he recognizes as one of his apprentices. Pain soon followed and used a summoned crab to free Konan, Jiraiya recognizing him to be Nagato by his Rinnegan eyes. When Jiraiya asks of Yahiko's fate, Pain explains his friend died and explains his personal ideology with his mention. Pain then reveals his intent to use the Tailed Beasts to create Forbidden Jutsu weapons of mass destruction that he will set to the nations, counting on their actions to force the world to "mature" and develop an aversion for war. Having heard enough, Jiraiya summons a giant frog named Gamaken to counter the chameleon-like creature that Pain summoned. | |||

Jiraiya and Gamaken begin their battle against Pain, who has hidden himself inside his chameleon summon as it uses camouflage. Jiraiya uses a barrier jutsu to help Gamaken as he needs to be still to summon Lord Fukasaku and Lady Shima so he can enter Sage Mode. Despite Pain's attempts to thwart Jiraiya's attempt with a barrage of numerous summons that included a multiplying dog, a drill-beaked bird, a rhino, and a bull, his mentor noting that he has more potential than that, Jiraiya succeeds in summon the elder toads and informs them of who they are facing. Though Fukasaku and Shima managed to dispose of the chameleon, Pain responds by summoning to figures as Jiraiya states his intent to take Pain down. | |||

Jiraiya blinds one of the two summoned figures, Fukasaku noting that all three share the same eyes and vision with Jiraiya realizing that the bodies each have only one specific purpose as one body absorbs chakra-based attacks. Jiraiya stalls for time while Fukasaku and Shima prepare a powerful genjutsu to defeat the bodies and are successful in doing so. Jiraiya was about to leaves when another Pain appears from no where and severs his arm, the sage finding his three opponents healed as they and the fourth are joined by two more. Jiraiya, recognizing Pain's main body to be Yahiko, stands horrified while wondering just who and what Pain is. | |||

Jiraiya goes into deep panic over Pain's identity as either Yahiko or Nagato, managing to escape the Paths of Pain into a barrier while taking the Animal Path Pain with him. Jiraiya kills the Animal Path Pain despite being impaled in the shoulder, recognizing him as the Fuma Clan ninja he fought years ago. Shima leaves on Jiraiya's request with the Animal Path Pain, as the sage remains behind to confirm that the other paths were all ninja Jiraiya crossed paths with in the past. Jiraiya figures out Pain's identity before his mortally wounded by the paths with his voice box crushed before he could tell Fukasaku. With the thought of Naruto's determination keeping him from losing consciousness, Jiraiya writes a coded message on Fukasaku's back and sends the frog away before the paths could stop them. Jiraiya ends up sinking, dying with no regrets as he realized that Naruto is the Child of Prophecy and is certain the youth can change the world for the best. | |||

Having the others remain behind, Sasuke enters a cave where he confronts what he learns to be a clone of Itachi. Itachi, musing how stronger his younger brother has become, tells Sasuke to meet him at the Uchiha hideout to settle things. As Team Hebi makes its way there, they encounter one of Naruto's shadow clones which Sasuke easily dispatches. This alerts real Naruto to Sasuke's location as his group make their way in his direction before finding themselves blocked by Tobi, essentially toying with them while keeping them from advancing further. After leaving his group with Kisame once they are near their destination, Suigestu deciding to fight Kisame, Sasuke continues on towards the Uchiha hideout alone. | |||

As Sasuke approaches the Uchiha hideout, Itachi waits for his brothers while recalling his past when he was an Anbu in the Hidden Leaf until the night he slaughtered the Uchiha Clan. When Sasuke arrives, he declares that his eyes have improved enough for him to see Itachi dead at his feet. The brothers begin their battle with genjutsu decoys before Sasuke stabs Itachi, revealing that he realized that his brother was aided in the Uchiha massacre by another Uchiha. Itachi reveals the identity of this co-conspirator to be the first Uchiha to Mangekyo Sharingan and one of Konoha's founders: Madara Uchiha. | |||

As Zetsu watches on, Itachi tells Sasuke the life story of Madara Uchiha and that he still lives despite having died long ago. Itachi also explains that while the Mangekyo Sharingan enabled Madara to control the Nine-Tails sixteen years ago, its use will eventually lead to blindness. But Itachi adds that only way to avert this is by taking the eyes of a blood relative as Madara did with his younger brother Izuna Uchiha, revealing his intention to take Sasuke's eyes to acquire an Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. Sasuke attempts to fight Itachi, but ends up being pinned to a wall as Itachi proceeds to rip out one of Sasuke's eyes out of its socket. | |||

As Itachi moves in to take his left eye, Sasuke assumes his level 2 Curse Mark form to force Itachi off him while revealing the removal of his right eye was actually part of his brother's Tsukiyomi genjutsu. With his genjutsu now useless, Itachi finds himself at a disadvantage against the more skilled Sasuke until he uses his Amaterasu on his brother. While Sasuke uses a Substitution Jutsu to escape the flames, Itachi berates his younger brother having used up most of his chakra left. But Sasuke reveals that he had come prepared and tells his brother he has one move left as storm clouds gather. | |||

With Zetsu noting that he used his Fire-Style jutsu and Itachi's Amaterasu to form storm clouds, Sasuke uses the clouds' lightning to wipe out the entire Itachi Hideout with his new lightning jutsu Kirin. However, Itachi survived the destruction caused by Kirin with an energy construct embodiment of his Mangekyo Sharingan: The Susanoo. At that time, with Sasuke now depleted of his chakra, Orochimaru finally makes his presence known as he uses the Eight Branches jutsu to break free from the Cursed Mark and intends to possess Sasuke's body again. But Itachi uses his Susanoo's Sword of Totsuka to seal Orochimaru in another dimension, purging the Curse Mark from Sasuke in the process. Out of jutsu, Sasuke is left at Itachi's mercy as his brother approaches him. But at the last second, Itachi taps Sasuke on his forehead and suddenly falls dead to the ground. | |||

The leaf ninja continue to fight Tobi, but all of their attacks manage to phase right through him. Zetsu arrives to inform Tobi the outcome of the Uchiha match with the leaf ninja overhearing it. Tobi, revealing his sharingan, discards his goofy persona in order to leave the fight and collect the brothers' bodies. Sasuke wakes up in a cave and Tobi approaches him, introducing himself as Madara Uchiha. An Amaterasu is unleashed from Sasuke's eye, but Tobi recovers from it and mentions how in-depth Itachi's plans were. Sasuke asks what he means and Tobi reveals that Itachi has been trying to protect him. | |||

Tobi tells Sasuke about the history of the Uchiha clan and how they and their rivals, the Senju clan, led by the man who would become First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, once made a pact to unite their clans and established the Hidden Leaf. But Tobi explains that he, Madara Uchiha, was forced to leave the village as his clan was secretly discriminated against by the Senju, returning later in an attempt to exact revenge. Years later, the Uchiha were planning a coup d'etat on the village and Itachi was chosen by the village leaders to spy on his clan from the inside. | |||

Tobi continues by informing Sasuke that Itachi was a double-agent who was assigned to leak intel on the Uchiha back to the village. When Itachi comes across Tobi, recognizing him as Madara, he convinced the masked man to help him undertake his mission of exterminating the Uchiha clan. They succeeded in their mission, although Itachi couldn't bring himself to kill Sasuke. Some time later, Sasuke reminisces on Itachi's final words to him, before breaking down into tears. He then changes his team's name to Taka and declares, with his new Mangekyo Sharingan, that their goal is to destroy Konoha itself. | |||

The Konoha teams decide to head back home as Sasuke remembers that he saw Itachi crying after the massacre. He then states that he cannot rebuild the Uchiha clan in the same way that Itachi had envisioned. Tobi, delighted to use Sasuke for his ends, gives him and Taka the task of capture the Eight-Tails while the Akatsuki hunt Naruto and the other jinchuriki they need. Taka tracks down the Eight-Tails Jinchiriki, Killer Bee, to the Land of Lightning and engages him in battle. Bee manages to overpower Jugo and Suigetsu before Sasuke steps up to fight him one-on-one. | |||

Sasuke fights Killer Bee and is injured by his swords. Karin heals him, and Sasuke, Suigetsu, and Jugo then begin a combined assault on Bee until he decides to use the Eight-Tails' power. Sasuke is injured and revived again by Jugo, who regresses in age as a result. All healed, Sasuke unleashes Amaterasu on Bee in desperation, finally able to subdue him. Meanwhile, two Cloud ninja watch the fight from a cliff, and they notice the Uchiha crest on Sasuke's back. They rush the news to Bee's big brother, the Fourth Raikage. |
