Mai Masri

Mai Masri (born April 2, 1959) is a U.S.-educated Palestinian filmmaker who has directed nine films.

Early life

Masri was born in Amman, Jordan on April 2, 1959.[1] She is the daughter of Munib Masri from Nablus and an American mother from Texas. Masri was raised in Beirut, where she has lived most of her life. She graduated from San Francisco State University in 1981. Soon after that she returned to Beirut and began making films.[2]

Personal life

Masri met her husband, Lebanese filmmaker Jean Chamoun, in 1982. They have made several films together. They married in 1986, and have two daughters, Nour and Hana. Nour is an interaction designer and graduate from Parsons School of Design and Hana is an actress and director based in New York. Mai was living near the Palestinian refugee camp of Shatila in Beirut when the Lebanese Phalangist militia carried out massacre and rape in 1982.[3]

Masri's pictures focus on Palestine and the Middle East and have won awards at film festivals throughout the world.
